And that's the notification I keep seeing after a Samsung/Android update this weekend to my S5. When I click that notification it takes me to Google Play services, but no option to update, like other apps. Usually you get update/open/uninstall but I only have "DEACTIVATE" as an option.
I tried looking it up (using Google to figure out Google Play seemed amusing, but I'm also tired from much grass mowing). Not seeing much information on what or why or how. Mostly just talk about how people can't update their apps without it, while I can update everything else I've tried.
Anyone with high levels of Google-fu have ideas?
so.. unless you update Google play, you can't update google play?

I can use Google Play. I just can't seem to update Google Play.
I got that same notification, too, after the Marshmallow update, on my S5. But, it seems to have gone away.
I also found E36 M3ty E36 M3ty battery life, afterwards. Like, my phone was dead three hours later E36 M3ty, just hanging out in my pocket. My wizard SiL pointed me to a website that instructed how to turn off a bunch of stuff that consumes battery, while in sleep mode, and so far, it seems to be helping.

Restart your phone. I had that happen too (S6) and I think that's how I resolved it.

Steps 3 & 4 weren't showing up on my phone, so I just went into advanced settings, or some such, "Show All Apps", and turned off everything except the "com.xxx" items. So far, it's working fine.

You know, maybe that helped, too. Dead battery forced me to restart it.

Somebody gave me 2 Android tablets to use with our autocross T&S system. What you say above is exactly the case... for ONE of them. Which is funny because they are identical models, the same age, and neither one was ever used which is why he gave them to me.
I had problems with apps refusing to update until I cleared Google Play's cached data. Then the tablet was unusable for about an hour as it frantically updated everything that it had been failing to update for the past few months.
