A friend came up with the idea to make a small fish tank out of a datsun valve cover he has sitting around.

I'd love to make a little fish tank out of an old valve cover too. What are some neat ones that would be easy to find?

I'm on the lookout for 2 or 3 rotor housings from a RX7 or 8 to make a fish tank out of. Unfortunately, people think they are made out of gold.

Just kidding. Cool idea.

Do it on the car, though. (I'm not kidding when I guess the fish will die if you do this).

No seriously...how cool would an entire cutaway engine be as a fish hotel? Maybe even have a few moving parts to show how things work. Fish waterpark in the top end!

In reply to Taiden:

How exactly is that a fish tank? Isn't it valve cover fish art? Where do the fish go? Won't it leak?

I got a crap one (with rotor) from a 12A in my shed. I picked it up for $5. I can look for more of them at the swap meet next month if you want.

PM me your details including pricing and number of housings you need. Don't forget we gotta ship them from WA to you, but I can get 2 to a flat rate USPS box (or go FedEx Ground for cheaper). 4/12-4/15 is the swap meet.

I want one too. Rotary fish tank > valve cover fish tank.

Well damn, sounds like I need to post a wanted thread for people when the meet gets closer. Mrs. Javelin will probably think I'm nuts to go shopping for a bunch of stuff for other people, but I like swap meets!

just gotta make sure there are no petrolium products left to leach out... other than that.. it would be VERY cool.

That said.. when I was a marine biology major in school.. friend of mine had several Salt Water aquariums in his apartment. in one of them he had blue claws.. they would lift the lid and escape all the time

I was thinking of dropping it off to get hot tanked or whatever you call it, then hopefully finding some kind of aquarium safe paint and coating the bore. Using plexiglass for the front and back. Hook the bubblers up to the exhaust port, feed through the intake, and lighting in the spark plug holes. That's what I'm thinking anyway.

Hot tanked at a machine shop, then sand/bead blasted, then powdercoated = totally safe for the fishies.

If I wanted to include a valve cover in an aquarium, I'd use one (or more) as the tank's hood. If I were to use rotary parts, I'd build it as a cutaway display with acrylic joining everything together.

So let's see...

We take the valve cover from this engine and incorporate it into an aquarium:

Then we add this fish:

And we have a Plymouth Barracuda? I guess it won't be a community aquarium.
