I wonder where the gas built up that caused the whole street to explode? A huge sewer pipe maybe? That guy in the foreground barely Johhny Depp'd it out of the way of that van in time!
I would have to guess a sewer pipe also. It's not hard to see how a decent gasoline leak into a mostly dry sewer, stoichiometry and a small ignition source would result in that.
Confined explosions can do an amazing amount of destruction.
