I've heard really good things about the AVS. It's supposed to be compatible with all of the NES games, including ones like Castlevania III which used a custom chip set (MMC5).
This is relevant here, but I was really looking for the thread where Pheller (I think) was looking for PC game recommendations. This is perfect. And free.

I recently found out that one of my all time favorite games was on Steam:
I showed it to my 13 year old and he was intrigued so I payed the $7 and got it for him Then I got my copy of the game out of the basement so he had the map and manual. This morning he said he was going to tell one of his friends about it and could not wait to get home today and play. Not bad for an almost 25 year old game.
