So my lease is up in the summer looking for another vehicle, I did some research and saw that the MK6 4dr Rabbit S is the same size as the Golf and about a 1/3 of the cost. I am already apprehensive of the reliability of any VW product as no one in my family ever had any luck. Any reason these are worth it?

It's not going to be a Toyota in terms of reliability or cheap maintenance, but the MkV/MkVI/MkVII VWs are considerably better than the MkIV, and seem to be slightly better with each generation.
It sounds like you're looking for an economical appliance, so unless this car fell into your lap for a price that's too low to pass up I'd keep looking.
The Rabbit is a Mk5.
You want one because the 2.5 sounds like an Audi R8 when you open up the exhaust:

I thought these did well with turbo kits added. Only complaint was poor gas mileage that I heard on these.

Watch out for failed pcv "valves" (more like a diaphram thingy). Those can blow your rear main in a hurry. Body electrics are sketchy also.

They do very well. A good friend of mine is making almost 400hp out of one.

Just to clarify, the Rabbit is a mk5. The Golf is a mk6. They're effectively the same model, just renamed, and renamed again for two different generations. So really you're comparing a mk5 "Golf" vs. a mk6 Golf.
I put 100K on a mk6 4-dr. Golf TDI and it was great, just got rid of it because VW gave too much money for the diesel scandal. The 2.5's in the mk5's are one of VW's more reliable power plants, and yes the Rabbits are cheap. Biggest gripe is mediocre fuel economy compared to competition, but the motors are torquey and drive well.
