The only thing I had an issue with is he's had the same quasi-mullet/Steve Perry hair since 1994. I-can't-look-away. But his show/shows are good and fun to watch.

Jesse James did a series of videos named Metal Church about metal fabrication. You can find them on Youtube, and they're quite good - it's just him, showing how to fab a motorcycle tank or whatever, with no drama or jerkiness. He is an excellent fabricator, and has a real appreciation for the history of it.

I honestly think that Jesse James' persona on television is exactly that. A persona. I think he's a damn good fabricator, and all the asshattery is just schtick that the producers write up. Like many celebs, he does it for easy cash, or just to stay in the spotlight enough to stay relevant.

Although those crazy awesome custom choppers have jumped the shark, I always liked his bikes way better than the gaudy stuff that the Orange County Chopper guys built.

Just because you can, doesn't mean that you should.

That's just it. Persona or not, there is no denying Jesse's talent. And he's never apologized for anything. It's just him and his stuff the way he wants it. Watch Monster garage again some time, you can tell when he's totally no berkeleys given and basically pisses off a project.

Oh, I don't deny that he is a very talented fabricator. He didn't get his name in that business by building junk (although in full disclosure I am in NO way a fan of choppers, to me they are a waste of time and effort).

That doesn't excuse treating people like crap. I don't care how good a fabricator he is. I'd walk in five minutes if he treated me like he does the people who ostensibly work for him. Done.

Jesse calls them "cake decorators" for a reason..

In reply to Curmudgeon:

If you're looking for some real, quality automotive shows, look no further than Mark Evans "...Is Born" series. Last time I checked, they could be found on The YouTubes.

Mark Evans "is Born" on wikipedia.

One of the best parts of the series, to me at least, is he starts off as a no-talent nothing in a cold shop with very few tools. As things go on he slowly builds skills and acquires nicer tools.

Just two pals building a car for fun. No fake drama. Not produced by Thom Beers. Good E36 M3.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention Chrome Underground here.

I made it through part of an episode with my wife , and after the third time of hearing "..this place is the worst neighborhood in the World, I have to protect my guys, I need to do recon so they don't go in blind, this place looks sketchy... " (and then showing a guy with his face altered smoking a cigarette waiting to cross the street)...I gave her the implied face palm and changed it back to whatever Dance/Talent show she wanted to watch in the first place.

That is a perfect example of the trend in custom bikes: putting together the most unrideable pile of crap that can be built. It's all about chrome and blingy paint. Sorry, not into that even faintly. It's a waste of effort and time.

less rolling resistance from the taller front wheel makes the bike more efficient. also rides over bumps smoother...

or something..

Wouldn't it ride over bumps better if it had suspension instead? (seriously)

Fantomwerks had a bit on a Heinkel bubble car restoration. While of course they couldn't get deeply into the nuts and bolts they did point out that sometimes drastic measures and big costs have to be considered before jumping into something like this and that sometimes an owner has to choose between reality and dreams.

On a similar note, that show about dragging crap out of the junkyard and fixing for a 'flip' (can't recall the name off the top of my head) involved a 1960 Ford panel truck being redone as an advertising vehicle for a doughnut shop went off the rails because (as far s I could see and this was probably staged) they spent $36,000 up front and the deal went south because there was no written agreement up front. That's about a stupid way to do business.

the only vehicular show i watch anymore is "what's in the barn?"

my parents went down to the wheels through time museum and say that dale is just like the rest of us gearheads, and has true passion for the bikes he finds. i'm planning to head there in december, but i've been planning that trip long in advance of them putting him on TV. that's the kind of thing i like to do, find forgotten things and give them some new life. i'm chasing a just barely postwar bike right now.

the only real "car show" any more is on Youtube, on the Motor Trend channel for some reason...

the recent one where they rescued a 1950 GMC from a junkyard was pretty awesome..

But then the mouth breathers will tune out. Can't have that.

If you go back and watch pretty much any TV show then stop to think of the demographics it's actually pretty easy to see why they are really dumbed down. But that's the world we live in.

I have had second hand feedback from folks that were on two different "reality" shows.

One car related show had them build a car in a short time and limited resources etc. And they went into it thinking it was going to be a real thing. The producers let them build the car and they were happy. The host wasn't anywhere to be seen. Then the producers told them to dismantle the car and they made them make bad parts to pretend they were having trouble and the host would literally walk on set, yell about them being stupid, pretend to make the good part they already had made then leave. He said sometimes they could hear the host pretending to be screaming at them when they weren't even in the set.

Then I met a young woman whose music career was destroyed by a reality show. She was made out to be a bad guy. She lost all her music deal chances. She said one episode had her saying things when she wasn't talking. They showed the back of her head and made the sound garbled and added captions to make it seem like she was badmouthing one of the other competition. She remembered the staff asking if she thought so-and-so a b1-otch and she replied "So-and-so a B1-otch?! Noway she is the sweetest!" Well they edited out all but the first part.

Horrible things these reality shows. I avoid all of them.
