Truth is, I never wore a helmet while mountain biking. Even after I took a spill that knocked me out for a few seconds. My parents never told me to, but I was into biking in the 90's when only dorks wore helmets. I'm glad I never regretted it. My kids do any time they are on a bike.
I was the dork wearing a helmet when mountain biking in the 80's and 90's. Ottawa is a bike-heavy town, and it was always cool to wear one. Thank goodness.
I once took some friends riding. One borrowed my mom's bike helmet. She then crashed and broke the helmet. She was soooo apologetic to mom - who said "don't apologize, that's exactly why I wanted you to borrow it".
Of course, I also skiied most of my life without one. I've only rung my bell once, and that's when I used to ski a lot harder than I do now. Still, it makes my wife a lot happier.

Here's some stupid for ya. I cringe every time I go into SC and see bikers on the highway with nothing but sunglasses on their noggin.
growing up in Panama city that looks like he's made SOME effort... in PC the standard dress was a tank, board shorts and flops... and anything smaller than 1000cc was just not worth considering... also recall someone almost crash into me going around a corner because he was so busy making sure his helmet that was sitting on the back seat didn't fall off.
on the side of bicycling... mom bought me a helmet back int he late 80's... complete with the lycra/mesh cover... I rarely wore it but when I started to get more serious into cycling (MTBing) and that largely had to do with a close friend of mine who had a pretty bad crash, riding down a hill she ending up crashing, ripped her lip away from her jaw, broke her nose, and split her helmet in two... but she's alive and well.
more recently I had a roadie friend who crashed... he is the most careful rider I know, rides with about $300 worth of lights on his bike type of guy... I'm not sure what happend but right around new years he crashed and ended up with a ditch... he ended up in the hospital for several weeks, a few weeks ago he had an emergency operation to releave pressure on his brain which got rid of the constant double vision and most of his balance issues... because of the balance issue he's no looking into trikes or quads (recumbnent style/fast ones)

still thinking of your family friend.. hope he pulls through
Thanks. They tried to take him out of the coma today and he became VERY aggressive and violent. They had to restrain him and put him back under. I don't know what the heck that means.
My brother was in a coma for two weeks. He was restrained when he came out. I think its something with the body running on pure instinct rather than rational thought.
My cousin who is the same age as me had a similar incident years ago. Coming down a huge hill on a regular skateboard got the speed wobbles and ate it hard. Massive brain swelling and I believe he had to be revived a couple times on the way to and at the hospital. He made a full recovery and is as normal as he ever was. Even with that I still to this day have never worn a helmet on a bicycle. I never got into skateboarding but was huge into freestyle bmx riding back in the day. My old man knees wont let me near a bicycle anymore. I wont get on my motorcycle without a full face helmet though.
Hoping for the best.

That sucks man, I hope your friend is ok.
I was always taught that if you were a costas for wearing a helmet while doing something, then A) you should be doing it hard enough so that a hemet makes more sense or B) you should be doing something cooler and wearing a helmet.
