I have mixed responses to tailgating. My major thing is the safety issue combined with being put on edge with the additional attention that puts on what's behind me. To have to factor in someone else's stopping distance on top of my own, especially because I know they're not paying the sort of attention to possible hazards that I am, so I will notice the need to brake before they do.
Usually though, I just accept it and move over to let them pass and tailgate someone in front of me.
Frequently, it happens when I'm in a conga line in the passing lane going a few MPH faster than other traffic, and there's nothing to be gained by passing me. I'm already going slower than *I* want to go. I'm not holding them up. I want to get ahead of slow traffic and speed up to my target speed. Or, I'm *not* in the passing lane, and if they want to go faster, they can just go around me. When that happens, I generally tap my brakes or put on my hazards to say, "Dude. Back off," or I just slow down and add 50% to my following distance.
Wangrods who are just pushy and weaving in and out of traffic and passing on the right in on/off ramps? Screw those guys. I don't like bullies. I won't antagonize them. But I will stand my ground and not be pushed around. I've watched a guy run himself off the road trying to pass me on the right in an ending lane.
Wangrod. Thanks for the new word!
I have rode extensively with tailgaters. They don't mean anything by it, they just have no sense of safe following distances.

On my way home from work last night there was an older woman driving between 70 and 85 (yoyoing) in the passing lane with her lights completely off. I got up next to her and tried to tell her they were off and she said she knows and sped off. I just don't understand people these days.
Most times when I try that they do Pickachu face at me like I want to rob them or something and then avoid eye contact like if they pretend I don't exist I won't.
I've given up.
Based on the thread title I was expecting to see this by now.
I just wish trucks would stay in the right lane so they can be passed safely.
Many people don't know it, but the largest campground in the world is the left lane of I80 across Pennsylvania. On any given day the campground is full of trucks doing 47.5 MPH passing a truck doing 47.4 MPH.

Stole it from a favorite YouTuber, Matt Colville. He does my favorite videos of tips on running D&D and other RPG's. That's his word for people who seem to derive pleasure from ruining everyone else's fun.
I have always wanted to let a tailgater pass me, then follow them to their destination. When they get out, follow them around on foot, but never be more than 6 inches behind them. I'm talking "smell their hair" close. See how long it takes before they say something, and when they finally do, act like it's a totally normal thing to do, it's just how I walk.
