Shoulda sent my inlaws to you. They just got thier power back yesterday. I went up to help clean up, they are in Castleton, and the Taconic parkway was closed both ways. When we got there, it was the first time I'd ever seen trees bent over 180 deg. It was very pretty but cold as hell.
Coming to work this morning I pass the new hotel at Exit 12 of I-87, it's five stories tall. The entire parking lot is National Grid work trucks, not a car or empty parking spot in sight!
Where I grew up (Columbia SC) every few years we'd get an ice storm. They were always the same: a day or two of sleet and snow with the temps in the high 30s/low 40's then two or three days of teens and twenties meaning all that stuff froze rock hard. Pine trees break easily under those conditions!
-34C in Lethbridge this morning. Jetta was outside, block heater not plugged in. Plain ol' 10w30 in it. It started...like it always does. 
I am in Southwest Michigan, and I am plenty content with it not getting any colder...
however, If you think snow is just snow, try living through LAKE EFFECT. We get CRAZY snow down here...
had an ice storm last Saturday so I couldn't make it to the last Rallycross of the season....so I lost the championship....boo... weather sucks.

Lake effect is cool..... I live in Jenison just on the edge of that crap. about 8" my parents live up in Oceana County. they got 2' of snow last week when we got rain.
People in Portland are going crazy right now. It's understandable for those not used to snow but having spent most of my winters driving in the sadistic mid-west, I find the whole thing kind of funny.
Our receptionist is panicking that she's not going to make it home.....in her 4-wheel drive Jeep Liberty with studded snow tires! Looking around the parking lot, my car (1 of only 5 people that showed up today) is the only one without snow chains, studded tires, or 4-wheel drive. I guess I can thank Michigan for all of those times it tried to kill me. No better training than that.
Michigan was a great snow training ground for me as well. Last year in December, my wife and went to the Grand Canyon for her birthday. We ended up renting a Chrysler 300 in Pheonix and driving up from there. I didn't realize how much snow can fall in the high deserrt near the canyon. The morning we headed back to Pheonix, about six inches fell over night and was still coming down. In Flagstaff we hit a near whiteout. Cruising along in that RWD luxobarge, about ever mile to half mile there was another SUV or 4wd truck off in the ditch. It was a slow trip until we came down to low enough elevation that the snow disapperared. The rear end stepped sideways for about a second and a half going up a hill, but I caught it. I was pretty impressed. The big Chrysler was easier to drive in the snow than I expected.
