I have been out of town for six day and came home to the well pump control box in the basement steady buzzing away. Quick check and no pressure on the gauge and no water pressure in the house. Shut off the main going to the house, the pump was still running and not building any pressure.

Pulled the cap off the well with the pump on and I could hear the pump running AND the sound of splashing water did the discharge line from the pump pop off/ break off or should I dig around the well and see what I can find?

Thanks, Paul B

I assume you are talking about a submersible well pump. Sounds like you have a hole in the well pipe above the water level. Could be from the well pipe rubbing against the well casing and finally let go, or it could be an issue at the pitiless adapter. Thats the thing the pipe hangs from and goes thru the well casing. The 90 thingy a few feet underground where the water takes a 90 turn and heads towards the house. Either way you are going to have to pull the pump. If its less than 300 feet and you are in good shape, you have a chance of doing it on your own. You need a 1" black iron pipe. It threads into the top of the pitiless adapter. Once its threaded in, you pull up real hard and the well pipe and 1/2 of the pitiless adapter comes loose. Then you can lift the well pipe and the pump up and out of the casing. You will need somebody else to drag the pipe out of your way as you lift it out of the ground. Just did one that was 340 feet and it really sucked because the water level was low and the well pipe was oversized at 1.25". 3 guys lifting and 2 to drag the pipe around the yard.

tr8todd, thank you. Your information was spot on, the line had come off the pitiless but was out of view due to the depth and only having an inspection light the other day. I pulled the pump and line out to inspect it for cracks or chaffing, a few marks were noticed but I am not worried about them at this time.

Come to find out the well pump sits 160 feet below ground and the pipe was wet at around 40 feet so I should be good to go for water. Just wondering do you know about how long a well pump last? This unit was dated 2007 so it's pushing 10 years old at this point.

Thanks again, Paul B (can now take a shower )

And pulling up 160 feet of well line with water inside should be put in the I am not 19 anymore thread.
