Up at 0 dark 30 this morning. Dumped a quart of oil in the DD and off I went to work. Left the oil filler cap off - doh - no wonder it was idling funny. Everything under the hood got lubed pretty well.

Yep, once is enough. Old time tech showed me a trick: put the oil fill cap on the hood latch so the hood won't close. That way you can't forget it!

Rule of thumb at most repair shops where I've worked.

took the word right out of my mouth.
Doh. I just knocked a plastic container full of leftovers out of the fridge and it exploded all over the floor, so I kind of feel your pain.
I used to do this on the Escort weekly. At least a couple dozen times. Never done it on any other car.
Do not put the cap on the hood latch on any Panther body, you have to slam those to close them and.. well.. finding oil caps is a pain in the ass when you are spraying an oil trail along the search path.
Did that once on my Dakota R/T, didn't lose a single drop. One heck of a baffle in that valve cover.

Wasn't going with the Panther, but rather "the answer"...I'd rather clean up oil than try and "fix" an aluminum hood.
