I stopped into the Weather-tech store and there's a spot up front marked "reserved" and there was a Porsche 356 there.

I assume it was the owners car, so ultra rich drive Porsche 356's.

So further support that rich people drive old used cars?

Same here, the last 20 years.

It's an insanely expensive service that's not really required. I can't believe it still exists.

100%  yes

Any list that says this is what X people drive is useless.  What do rich people drive? Anything from junk to crazy expensive stuff.

One thing I've never seen a rich person drive is anything that could be categorized as junk - at least not on the street, I have seen a few in LeMons-y race cars on track.

Closest on the street might be ordinary or even notably cheap cars that are in concours condition, in addition to the aforementioned Tercel guy I know of another guy who used to DD a minty AE88 sedan.

I was talking about first cars with one of my daughters yesterday (and, no... she's not getting a brand new car).

She said, "I don't want anything too nice. All the kids at school drive stuff from, like, 2000."

There's one kid that I always notice when I'm waiting in line to pick her up in the afternoon. He drives a 1986-ish Jaguar XJ-6 with aluminum mesh wheels, and looks like he's sporting a David S. Wallens Starter Haircut.

Mrs. Snowdoggie's boss, who owns several businesses and millions in commercial real estate in the Dallas Area, drives an old PT Cruiser that actually used to belong to his parents before they died. How cheap is that?

His wife gets a Mercedes SUV.

There are some ways in which money has changed me, and some things just seem to stay the same. I present to you my road trip chariot for this weekend:

Some of us ghoulish, tyrannical 1%ers were at one time human beings and vestiges of the old ways still remain.

One of the adages I've come up with over the years is "the best way to be poor is to worry about looking rich."

My definition of upper class is being able to eat cake and have it to.  I'm not quite there so I've got a forced choice of either having cake or eating cake...nothing gives me greater satisfaction than knowing I've got a big pile of berk off cake I can throw at whatever problem comes my way.

Truth. My wife's favorite phrase is "can we just throw money at it?" Mostly because she hustled her way to being able to always say yes. We stay living below our means for various reasons, and the materialistic image problem that too many people have is certainly one of them.

Honestly, I am terrible at looking or acting rich because I don't have a ton of experience at it yet. However, I am great at acting poor, so much so that it is impossible to break some of the old conditioning. I had a conversation with an associate yesterday about picking up that GLH and I am fairly certain that they are just not capable of understanding what I do with my time. But, I hang with tons of rich people these days and they don't have any more automotive acumen than average.
