We rented a Renegade Trailhawk for 8 days last year in Hawaii (big island....highly recommended).  We initially booked an Altima, but they ran out of those andgave us the Trailhawk for no extra charge.

Like Mezzanine and D2W said previously, I didn't hate it, much to my surprise.  I liked the easter eggs strewn all about.  It was peppy around town when shifted manually.  It handled the mountain roads well, even when loaded with 3 adults, 1 baby and gear.  Mileage in the hilly stuff was pretty meh, about 20 iirc, but we averaged nearly 24 once you included lower elevation cruising.  The infotainment center on the dash had enough gizmos going that it was fun for me to try and hypermile my way back up the MPG meter.

The Trailhawk suspension/4wd worked well enough.  We went places that "normal cars" weren't recommended to go, and didn't get stuck or bang anything up.  Did it fare as well (or quickly) as a Wrangler off road?  Hell no.  But it was comfortable, quirky, entertaining and cheaper to run (and rent!) than a Wrangler for sure.

Stereo/gadgets were good, A/C worked well (it was black, and in Hawaii in August, but wasn't ever an issue), cargo space was pretty OK.  Would have been nice to have a little extra room behind the back seats, but it didn't keep us from packing anything along.

I'd rent one again, plain and simple.  Can't say that about every car I've ever rented.

Man, you can say that again. I rent a lot of cars, and generally dislike them as boring appliances. Appliances are great and all, but they aren't what I'd choose to drive. The Renegade was the first I'd had in a while that had some personality.
