I'm in the keys, phone, wallet, knife camp too. I take the train usually so no car keys, just my house and mailbox keys on a gerber artifact. I love that little tool. The knife is a Boker Plus Urban Trapper. It's so thin and light I barely even notice it in my pocket.

EDIT: I almost forgot my watch! Bertucci A2T Highpolish with a lovely Horween leather band. One piece titanium case makes it basically indestructible. No pins to lose and the bezel is raised to protect the crystal from damage.

Oooooh I love a good EDC thread. It's fascinating to see what people cart around on their day-to-day.

Here's mine on a workday:

From left to right, clockwise;
-Galen Leathers Extra Large Moleskine Cover (Gotta have a a place to keep your work planner and stuff.)
-Rhodia N 08 Notepad (I use this to take notes on my students and record flight/mission related info.)
-Pilot G2 pens (Various colors for grading work and staying organized. Stock G2 ink. It's great stuff.)
-Moleskine Extra Large Weekly Planner ("Paper Brain" #1. Work calendar.)
-Google Pixel in an Incipio Esquire case (Nice phone. Great case.)
-Maxpedition Gear Hook (Yeah, it's a tacticool pocket protector.)
-Challenge coin (Don't leave home without one!)
-One Star Leather Parker Sloper Jr. (This represents my true EDC. It's my wallet.)
-Moleskine Classic Extra Small (Paper Brain #2.)
-Fisher Space Pen Stowaway (Tiny notebook, tiny pen. Stock Fisher cartridge.)
-Galen Leather No.33 Field Notes Cover (Extra wallet and planner #2's home)
-Moleskine Pocket Weekly Planner (Personal planner. Yeah it's a lot of planners but it's nice to keep work and play separate.)
-Zebra Mini Ballpoint Pen (I forget what cartridge is in there. Probably a Uni Jetstream.)
-Leatherman Skeletool CX (Every tool I'd need to use on the regular. Read: Bottle opener.)
-Listerine Breath Stripes (Hate it when people breathe coffee breath in my direction. Trying to be considerate.)
-Chapstick. Jack Black this time. (Am human. Have lips.)
-Vargo Titanium Eagle Spork (I bring lunch from home a lot.)
-Expo Dry Erase Markers (I spend a lot of time intricately writing on whiteboards.)
-Casio calculator (Gotta do math.)
-Kuru Toga 0.05mm 2B lead (Feeds the yet-unmentioned pencil. Japan loves its pencils)
-Campus 2B eraser (Picked this up in, again, writing utensil-obsessed Japan. Yes it's designed to work best with the lead I use. And yes, it works really well.)
-Skilcraft grease pencil (Grease pencils are the traditional way we write on this little performance placards on the airplanes. Plus you can use them to coat copilot's headset earcups with grease to give them two nice rings around their ears.)
-Kara's Kustoms Bolt G2 (Soooo beautiful. Soooo heavy. Sooo expensive. It's constantly a treat just to have it in my hand and never fails to perk me up, even on E36 M3ty days. Mont Blanc ballpoint in blue for the cartridge. Beautiful.)
-Uni Kuru Toga pencil (has a little mechanism in it that rotates the lead as you write. It really does make a difference. And for $5? Buy one, they're on Amazon.)
-Luminox Field Chronograph (Love the Tritium illumination.)
-Toyota 4runner keys (06, V8, Sport Edition. Great car.)
-Photon Freedom LED light (Gotta have a little light. Plus, because they're on my car keys, true EDC.)
-Victorinox Officer knife (Blade, bottle opener. Corkscrew. I'm set.)
-Sunwayman R5 (Incredible little light. 3 brightness settings controlled by a smooth magnetic ring-switch.)

If you're curious, that's 2lb 14oz in various pockets, and 2lb 3oz in the big planner. I'm no Lotus.

The intricate detail of each item you can recite is impressive. Carefully selected, no doubt, to complete you. Are you the narrator from Fight Club before he meets Tyler?

Isn't the narrator in fight club Tyler as well...?

I'm a big fan of buy once, cry once, so I tend to put thought into even pencils! "Own fewer things, but really good things." Which is a weird thing to say and carry around all that stuff, but it's a good philosophy!

Not much goes well with dress slacks, so I keep necessities stashed in my desk, in the car and at home. I have a leather messenger bag for work travel. It carries my computer and iPad, any paperwork I need, assorted pens, charging cords and business cards. It's emptied after every trip. If I am going out for the weekend, I may carry a Leatherman and a Beretta. I guess I travel pretty light.
Actually that is a good point--I should probably take my leatherman out of my work bag and put in something that is TSA friendly and/or very cheap. Any suggestions for a TSA friendly multi tool? Ideally something that would have flathead, phillips, pliers, scissors, and bottle opener. I could put a razor-knife in there that would take care of that requirement, and just throw the razor away if I forget to take it out.

I went through this about a month ago and abandoned the idea when I started reading reviews. About a third were stories about how people loved them until they lost them to security somewhere because there was a screwdriver, or because "tools" were not permitted, or because the agent wanted it.

If I were to buy a TSA-specific multitool, it'd need to be cheap.

I've carried the Leatherman Style PS pretty much since they changed the TSA rules to allow carrying very short scissors, and I've never once had them taken away or (ultimately) been told that I couldn't fly with them.

I usually get three different reactions when I go through security with it in my bag or coat pocket and they go through the X-ray.

  1. They've seen them before and don't give it a second look and I go on without any delay.
  2. They ask to inspect it and confirm that it doesn't have a blade and meets their requirements for being allowed on the plane. They'll look it over and open it up and say, "OK, you're fine." Occasionally one of them will ask exactly what it is so they can look into it for themselves.
  3. I'll get someone new or especially anal who says that I'm not allowed to fly with it. In this case I politely ask to speak to the supervisor to discuss it with them, and in the very few cases where this has happened the supervisor has looked at it and told the over-ambitious agent that it's fine and sends me on my way with it. Usually they supervisor doesn't actually come over, the agent will show it to the supervisor and they'll give the OK.

While I'm not the most fond of the TSA- I had a pocket knife I'd had since I was a Cub Scout go missing from a checked bag shortly after 9/11 and I still blame them for its disappearance- I've always found that being polite and respectful with them keeps me out of trouble and makes things easier. And this from someone who when I'm not running late will opt out of the body X-rays...

Smart move, the very slightly increased cancer risk from going through those scanners is just as likely to kill you as a terrorist.

It's actually good to skip the scanner occasionally, keeps the TSA folks on their toes.

I share my sentiments with Carlin.

Luckily my job really doesn't require anything, so I carry my phone, wallet, keys.

I hate rattling or jingling keys, and I hate belt clips of any sort. If I was a maintenance guy I'd probably carry a backpack.

My truck however is quite prepared for a wide variety of situations. My hiking bag is setup differently than my biking bag. I've actually minimized what I carry on the MTB, tube, co2, tool, in a fannypack (ENDURO). My hiking bag has food, water, paper maps, first aid, knife, torch, etc.

Then there's wallet, general purpose keys on one ring, keys for the vehicle du jour on another ring, work keycard in my wallet, knife, phone, and either the Glock or the Kel-Tec.

I bought a bunch of carabiners from the hardware store so I can easily stash my keys or other small things onto my backpack and those have come in really handy on multiple occasions.

RFID badge for access to office parking and building.

Cell phone.

Pistola...self-preservation item that I hope to never need to use, but will if threatened.
