Here are two Toyota Hilux pickups. As far as I can tell, both bed types were available.
One has smooth sides and a center handle on the tailgate. The other has tie-downs along the top, and double tailgate latches.

I would classify the lower box as "antique". I've not seen a Japanese pickup with a box lie that since the 70's.
Nice if you want to actually work with the truck, I must say.
I like the second bed.. if I wanted a Work truck, that is what I would want. Lots of tiedowns that don't get covered or in the way, and a very secure tailgate
Yes, I suspect they sell the second type to areas that actually use the truck from something other then going to the mall and back. I know I would prefer it.
Don't know how you would describe it though. Outback style? Utility style? Savanna style?
This scenario was common on Japanese pickups in the US in the 70's.
To avoid the "chicken tax", Japanese manufacturers would send chassis-cabs over as "incomplete vehicles" and add the beds at a shop near the port.
Back in those days, we'd call the beds with the side latches and hooks "Japanese beds" and the smooth-sided beds with center-latch tailgate "American beds".
