I have gone away from my electric razor back to a Mach 3 razor but those refills are silly expensive. What do y'all use? I was tempted to try out the Dollar Shave Club or Harry's but they aren't much cheaper for multiblade. I have tried cheap razors like the Dollar Shave's humble twin and they take many passes to get anything done and my neck is left raw.
I use the Gillete vibrating ones. The razors seem to last longer because the hair gets vibrated through the razors before it gets gummed up.
You can also take the razor off to let your lady have some funin the shower.
Merkur Long Handle safety razor and Feather blades.
Costs me something like 30 cents a week to shave.
Thanks DrBoost! Your post persuaded me to just pull the trigger.
cup of mineral oil, keep your razor in it between shaves and rinse off before use. Blades last me 10-16 months each.
I switched to a straight razor about 6 months ago and I haven't looked back...
(To add some context: I have to be clean shaven every day for my job.)
I went to a Schick triple blade and can't tell a difference between it and the Mach 3

I have to be clean shaven, too. Where do you get your razors. I need to get a good one. The cheap one i have needs sharpening beyond what the strop can do.

I read that Dollar Shave Club just resells Dorco products, so I bought a handle and a years' worth of 4- and 5- blade disposables and cartridges for something like 30-35 bucks direct from Dorco's website.

I bought mine from a guy on a local gun forum. I also bought a hone and sharpened mine up myself. Mine's an old Red Imp from what looks like the 60's. I also see them frequently in antique shops. Dropping the cash for a hone (4000/8000 grit) was one of the best things I ever did for my shave.
I have a friend that only buys new and he lays out cash for Dovo razors, but they are spendy.

Cool! I'm glad you like it. I've been using a safety razor for years now and could never switch to the cartiridges again. I think I pay $0.10 a shave on average, used to pay $1.00 a shave with the multi-blade marketing hype razors. My initial start up was $100, but I didn't buy anything for a year I think it was. Now I buy blades every 6-9 months. Every 18 months I'll buy some Wool Fat shaving soap.
And it's a better shave.
The0retical, have you tried the wool fat soap? Me likey.

I am back to using my old double edge safety razor, and am having more fun playing with this variety pack, discovering that there really is quite a difference between the blades.
I switched to shaving every 3rd to 7th day depending on when I need to be presentable and just use whatever the hotel gives me for free. Usually some sort of 1 or 2 blade Bic disposable. When I'm at home I grab the wife's leg fuzz razor (mach 3? 4? 7?) and use whatever blade is in it with some Dial soap while my face is hot in the shower. I'm whatcha' call "low maintenance". If I didn't have really E36 M3ty, stubble-only irish face hair I'd rock some sort of long ass wizard beard like Gandalf. And launch fireballs from my awesome runestaff at all you metros who order special products and talk about shaving like a lost art. Shooting fireballs with a runestaff is a lost art. Cutting your hair is something you can do with a stick if you really need to.

no help here … full beard since 1968 … just using this thread to add to my post total
cheap quad off brand ones from wally world
Schick slim twins. Those crazy super wide 5 or more blade razors feel wrong and I have to go over areas of my face several times where the thin 2 blade razor gets it in one pass.
If you can pull it off, I really like the short beard. My razors last forever, as I'm just shaving my neck a few times a week. I trim the beard about once a week with the electric Norelco trimmer. The best part is that once you have a beard, people are less likely to notice a couple of days of stubble on your neck. It's really the best option for a lazy guy like me.

On a serious note, i've always wanted to try straight razor shaving. I always hated those multi-blade mach 20's and i don't like the job electric ones do.

Not yet bought a puck of cheap Colonel Conk to see if I liked it and found out it lasts forever, unlike the 8 dollar cans of shave goo. Once that is used up wool fat is next up as it was that thread that made me decide to try safety razors.

I've given up trying to stay current in that thread or the GGA thread.

I tried the straight razor thing but it just takes too long. I use a cheapo 3 blade Gillette disposable... for about six months. I go through two per year. Run it backwards over the tough part of your palm every few days to knock the high spots off of the blade, use good shaving soap, and deal with it. Pennies per week.
I recently forgot my razor while traveling and grabbed a freebie single-blade razor from the front desk. I did not care for it, although back in the day I loved those Bic Metal blades. Now I'm using some sort of five-blade setup. In fact, this is exactly what happened to me: http://www.youjustmademylist.com/?p=3098
I have gone the same route as the OP. electric - mach 3 and then to a dual edge safety razor like fox and others have mentioned. Awesome way to cut bills and razor burn
