What ridiculous thing do you want to buy that isn't car related?
When I get a house, I want to get a Skee Ball machine. I used to spend hours in the arcade doing two things, pinball and Skee Ball. I have an unhealthy addiction to both.

Skeeball machines are probably cheaper. Arcade games used to be cheap to get a few years back. Gotten quite expensive.
A coworker want sto buy an old timey bowling alley. Believe it or not we came across one in an old textile mill office building, but we couldn't arrange to buy it.
I have a friend who bought a solid hardwood shuffleboard table that was built-in to a commercial bar that closed at an auction. He installed it in his basement. I thought he was nuts but everytime I go over there we use it. It is really awesome and since it is all solid hardwood it is really nice to look at too. Kinda like this... only part of the wall instead of free-standing:
I want a teppanyaki-style griddle and table combination, like they use in Japanese steakhouses.

The Backyard Miniramp... Helping 30-somethings convince themselves that theyre still young for decades.
...and I want one

Me too, me too.
I also want an over under garage with a car elevator.

I had one of those! A bunch of friends and I all pitched in and built it one weekend when I was 13 or so. It was in my back yard for years, and I still sucked at it.
Something like this. I used to be in to these when i was a kid. With the new technology they become uber cool. I was actually thinking of putting a digital video camera on one and using it for building facade inspection's and just general marketing videos and stills of project's

Yep, there were several that went thru the rounds in my neighborhood...every iteration of it, there were more and more shortcuts taken in its assembly...mini ramps dont fare well once theyve been cut up, transported, and put back together with drywall screws for the fifth time
Got the pinball machine. Got the wood to make a pinewood derby track. Got a shooting range (archery and hockey) in the basement...
I want a commercial waffle iron.

You say that like it's a bad thing.
I don't need to spend money on a bull pup shotgun; luckily it isn't for sale yet. I want it though. Badly.

As a skater nearing 40, I can say that it's not about convincing yourself you're young. It's about loving skateboarding. Why is it any different than softball, soccer or hockey at our age? You're just as likely to get hurt at one of those sports.
Tell a 40 y/o surfer he's trying to be young. Good luck. Do it for the love of it and it will all make sense. I wish I had the room in my backyard for a mini.
ANYWAY--my dumb purchase will be all of the parts for a singlespeed buildup of an old road bike frame that belonged to my Dad. I already have three bikes. Why the hell do I need a fourth that only has one speed???
Because I want it.
