I've got an Iphone 5. I like it about as much as that effin Windows 8 computer they gave me at work. But I digress...
So every couple of minutes, I get a notification sound that I've got an email. Nothing.
If I open the mailbox window, I get a notification (or 2), then a bar at the bottom of the screen indicating it is downloading "1 of 1". After a couple of seconds, the bar will go away.
But it hasn't downloaded anything. In other words, with NO emails coming in, I am getting email verifications, and it appears to be trying to download something unsuccessfully.
I've checked my email accounts through a computer, and there are in fact no new messages.
So what's up? Is this some form of malware?
Thanks!

Should have mentioned... I checked for updates (none), and rebooted (it didn't help).
It's more or less your iPhone having an issue syncing with your mail. My work phone which is an iPhone 4 has a syncing issue's.
Try to wipe your email info off the phone and then re-enter your info.

I would second this. I've got a 5, and before that had the original. I've never had problems with mail that weren't caused by having the mail set up incorrectly somehow or another.
My work mail sometimes shows that I have an unread mail item that isn't there. The only way to get rid of it is to delete the account and then re-enter the account info. If it makes you feel better, the solution was given to me by an android user that has to do this weekly (I have had it happen twice in as many years on first an iPhone 3, then a 4S).
I'm not a techie by any stretch, but I'd check "all mail," (not just the inbox.)
Also, CLOSE the email app by double tapping the back button (which will pull up a list of all the open apps at the bottom of the screen,) then press on the icon till it shakes and close it.
That may be common knowledge(?) but I didn't know it until I'd had my phone for about 6 months. It fixes all kinds of little goofy issues.
Work email through google.
Personal email through google.
Gmail app on Android.
Its even better than a Blackberry for email.
