I have seen three VW transporter pickups in the last two weeks. All different owners. One with a nice patina, one fully restored, and one today that was "hot rodded".
I thought these trucks were rare?

VWs seem to travel in coincidental packs. Most of the people I work with have never seen a Scirocco until I start working with them. I now see at least 2 others running around near my work on a regular basis.
I saw one on a trailer last week. First time I'd ever seen one in person.
When I was in high school, I worked near a Corvair specialist. Not only did I get to see the rare Greenbrier pickup, but I actually knew what it was.
Some of my odd VW friends are in California at something over the last week. Four buses and rampsides, driven from Saskatoon to Cali and back.
One made it without trouble. I don't really think the designers of aircooled buses had Montana style distances in mind when they built them.
I haven't seen anything other than pics of them VW transporters, but this is the time of year everyone gets their weird old cars out around here. I don't know if they are passing through on the way to a car show or what but it's the only time of year any cool cars ever roll around.
I saw 3 model T Ford trucks just sitting in a hotel parking lot the other day. It was like they were on a road trip or something, I don't know who would want to do that at a top speed of 40mph . Saw a Maserati Bi turbo the same day too.
I saw five French cars this morning, 40s Citroen, a big SM and some CVs. Must be something going on at the Museum this weekend.
If you replace or modify the power plant, is a Transporter pickup something you can live with?

It would probably move along nicely with newer passenger car suspension and a chevy v8
I knew a Porsche tech whose parts chaser was a Microbus with an air cooled 911 drivetrain. It would scare the crap out of people on both sides of the windshield.
