The boss dragged home a very straight Cortina this weekend. I am considering buying it. I am betting it has the Kent 1.5 under the hood. From what I understand a SBF doesn't fit. An LSX is out as well.
What would you bolt in? I liked the look of the 1.8 miata lump that was covered in GRM a few years back.
Lotus stripes are a given
Ok. Go! .

Toyota 4AGE, (though a Miata engine would work just as well), for a twin-cam inspired replica.
I haven't been 'round there in a while, but I'm pretty sure there's a chap on the retrorides board with a 4AGE'd Cortina.
Or, what about the turbo engine out of a Merkur?

My first (and doubtlessly far from last) thought is one of the modern Fords.
Making sure to sound foolish, I don't recall what the most current/best is (Duratec? Zetec? ZOMGTec?), but I get the impression that this gets done frequently in European vintage rally.
Of course, any swap which is that "cookbook" may bore you...
I'd stick w/ a Ford flavor

MZR engine with Cosworth bits, because it is the right thing to do.
Zetec with ITBs, or some other newer mazda/ford 4 cylinder.
Yeah, 2.3 Duratec is the way to go. That's a classic. You don't want to stuff something non-Ford in there. Add a turbo if you need a ton of power, but a 2.3 Duratec can make quite a bit N/A as I understand it.
Is the 2.0 EcoBoost available as a crate motor yet?
Zetec($250), cams($400), Weber manifold($200), Webers($700), header($200) - other than the engine, those are ballpark numbers for new parts. And those parts will get you about 180hp. Go for ITB injection and you'll be closer to 200hp.
All good suggestions here, my immediate thoughts were 4AGE and 3TC but I like the idea of sticking a modern Ford engine into an old Ford. The EcoBoost is a seriously good engine.

I'm liking the 'all in the fambly' Zetec swap, too. Long shot: 2.3 turbo T Bird motor? Heavier and not quite as punchy but would still be fun.
duratec 2.0 out of a Miata, change valve covers to read ford. done.
Trick- take 2.3l out of Ranger, swap in 2.0l Pistons, boost. But I have to double check on that one.
I perfer the later engines over the ZTEC, since the block is aluminum, and pretty light. Like the Ztec- lots of performance parts available, too. I've done development on both, which does alter my opinion.
I'd put a new Ecoboost 4 cylinder in there. Little new with the old. The engine coming in the Explorer and the new Focus ST will be a stout little aluminum lump with a lot of punch for that car.

Yah know... the DISI is sort of like a Zetec..... and it is a twin cam 4 banger...
Or as Ben said- F2T. Or FE3. Or cossie motor (but them's expensive)
Isn't it sad when you can't just put an LSx in?
However, the Ford 2.3 with Turbo is an enchanting idea.

This because Zetecs are cheapo, but for that classic look add this

A BDA style cam over. Yummy

At the moment, I would avoid this path like the plague. It's not a crate motor right now, and converting it to run without the rest of the car would be a major challenge. Let alone finding a gearbox that would bolt up to it.
The simplest ones would be a Ranger/Miata swap of the new Duratec, since it's already RWD, or a 1.8l Miata swap, then the piece together of the ZTEC swap.
Probably the easiest would be the 2.3l Turbo out of a turbocoupe or a merkur.
In reply to Adrian_Thompson:
That's seriously cool.
Another vote for Duratec or Zetec, it's a fairly well documented swap and you can even get most of the bits to convert one of these engines to a RWD setup from places like retro ford (see Adrian's link above).
Of course if one wants to fab up everything, I'd be tempted to stick a 13B in there .
some large displacement 4cly ...with a supercharger
The Zetec is very well documented. It also looks good in there.
I think the 2.3Turbo would be too heavy for one of these.
I am going to see what the boss wants for it today. I am pretty sure we can work out a deal.
Not much to add other than I love these cars.............
