I built a teak helm for my boat and it's time to reassemble. Although it's not necessary, the better I can seal the area around the steering shaft the less likely I am going to get corrosion/water inside my center console. I was thinking of getting a thick piece of rubber, and cutting it to washer size so that i could kinda wedge it between the wood and the stainless steel top plate I made. Any other ideas?
Sounds good to me. Beautiful wood refinishing. How about a picture from afar so we can see your work?
We have 1/4” thick neoprene circles at work. It might work?
Would neoprene wear out in that case?
can you find a rotary shaft seal in McMaster Carr?
As you have that large chromed plate to cover most anything up. How about This?

Good idea, I'll make a build thread and post here.

That would probably work great, I'll see if I can find any.

If it did wear out I think it would take a while. like I said it's not critical that it's water tight. Just need to minimize water from a direct hit from the hose when cleaning. Otherwise it shouldnt get very wet.
Rotary shaft seal would be cool to incorporate but I would have to cut the wood/finish to get it to work. Maybe next time!

Not bad but also not the right size and I'd like the seal to be as close as possible to the stainless plate so that water isn't sitting in there.
