The Railroad company has been working on the tracks within 10 miles or so of my house, mostly at overpasses.  Their equipment is kept on a siding a block or so from me, they start work at 4:30 - 5:00 am.  Because it's posted, I can't just walk over and peek (without getting arrested) but you know when they start.

There is one piece of equipment that spools up and at speed emits a high pitched whiny noise that just penetrates.  They've moved down the track a bit and after 40 minutes or so it's better, hidden by trees.  But what does that?  Like a commercial wood chipper but different pitch and volume.  I don't hear a big diesel pulling the train of small cars-carts away,  so could it be a different type engine?

Because they're spending time at overpasses, could it be some kind of Nondestructive Testing Equipment, like Ultrasound, some crazy portable gyro fired X-Ray?

The overpasses in a 10 mile radius of me are being somethinged, dunno what.  They laid down 12 X 12" square logs to make roads for big equipment.

What's that noise?

They do perform ultrasonic testing on rails to check for flaws.

I sell these dudes hoses - Loram makes a big vacuum to suck the ballast up during repairs.  Is it a vacuum sound?

Thanx guys, the ballast sucker sounds closer.

One day if I'm vertical at 4:30 am, I'll make a recording. 😁
