Mark Knopfler is great, I'll back up 'Why Worry' two or three times. Someone else whose singing I like is Sting from The Police, the 'semi acoustic' version of 'Don't Stand So Close to Me' is worth a listen or 3 too.

I guess the 80's weren't as big a music wasteland as I sometimes think.

I think he said in interview that he felt his solo for Unforgiven was what he felt was his perfect guitar solo. I swear they hired a pinch-hitter for his solos on Justice. Hetfield is bar-none the better of the two, which really isn't saying much. The two of them SLAYED it on Justice. The "Black Album" and subsequent albums left a lot of people (myself included) wondering "Did they suffer brain injuries or something?"

Agreed. I think Nugent is a douche, but the song rocks. I also can't stand Clapton, but he has some sweet licks.

Lots of good stuff mentioned in this thread. I'm still sticking with Bold as Love as my favorite solo(s). Though if I had to pick a favorite player it would be Duane Allman. The guy essentially invented southern rock.

Joe Satriani fan here. Saw him in concert once around 1989 in VA at a hole in the wall club, then again last year at Music Hall in Cincy. Surfing with the Alien is still one of my "desert island" CD's.

I thought I was in the vast minority for hating Clapton. He's only at his best when he's trying to sound like someone else. Don't get me started on the crap he writes.

SRV is the best in my book. The intro to Couldn't Stand the Weather is my favorite by just a little. In addition to that: Lenny, Riviera Paradise, Hendrix's Voodoo Chile, Texas Flood. The version that's on the box set is from the Montreux (?) Jazz festival and you can hear booing in the background, because he didn't quite fit with some of the audience. But he had a lot of Jazz in his playing. There were a lot of stragne jazz chords in there.

The intro to One World is my favorite segment of Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits. Meaty.

You know, Zappa was a real hack on guitar, and readily admitted it, but he did create some really incredible improvisational pieces. I will have to change my answer to Rat tomago.
