I'm not a fan either. Working in the food industry, it was a matter of time before it got to our little factory. I'm amazed we made it to July, TBH.

Margie,
We share your fear. I work in construction. Been going 6 long days per week since March. A counter girl at a supply house i frequent laughed at my mask and told me the whole thing was a media fabrication. She had a revelation on the way to the hospital last Friday.
As i have been telling my Grandsons since March, "It's all fun and games until Grandpa dies."
Stay safe.
They were literally one of the 4 couples--including our kids--on my quaranteam, since I knew they were taking all precautions because of their health challenges. But they still had a business to run, with many of their customers fighting and complaining about their mask rules. Stay safe, my friends.

Just wondering... why do you think it was only a matter of time, because of food industry? I’m in the food industry as well, blessed to be still working, and what I see at work makes me think we are less likely. Already have good cleaning habits.
I refuse to live in fear. I will not be afraid of this bug. I will not be baited into fear by the 24/7 doom and gloom. I will not be drug down into the depths of this insanity. Only you can decide if you are going to be afraid or live your life.
Unfortunately, I am not allowed to live my life because others are afraid. This makes a depressed person even more depressed. I can't get away from it. IT's every other commercial on TV. There's no movie theaters, they all closed down or aren't allowed open. No music events, no dinners at bars with friends. We've all been forced into isolation for hte last 4 months. People are starting to berkeleying lose it. There's violence and shootings over masks for berkeleys sake. We have riots and looting STILL across the country. Can't there be anything good left that hasn't been taken away?
My rock cracked last night. The one thing that has kept me going. The one thing that has allowed me to push on even though everything around us is terrible. She's trying to prepare for at least 2 months of virtual learning with 7 high special needs kids that according to the state still require their 410 minutes of assisted instruction per day. The programs she has used for the last 2 years are now no longer allowed. There's no instruction or classes to learn the new or even what the new expectations are. She still watches the news before I come home and she is burnt the berkeley out. She cried half the night.
I just wish someone would take 30 berkeleying seconds and see the mental toll this is having across the nation, and likely world and put a cap on the 24/7 E36 M3 show and the constant politization of everything and just learn to be good berkeleying humans. Stop demonizing people for their choices. Stop telling people it's only a minor inconvience.
Signed,
One stressed the berkeley out tired person.
this is my current office and is how it's been for months. I have clear splash shields on Both sides. Not another person within 20 feet of me in a building that moves the entire volume of air 10times per hour because of the fumes and risks of what we do. Break rooms are off limits. There's no outside seating for breaks. So I am here 9 hours a day wearing a mask that helps no one. Then when I leave I am now mandated to wear it to the car. I have zits and rashes from the constant rubbing. My trimmed beard hurts. And for what ? This is why blanket bullE36 M3 rules are bullE36 M3.
Bob,
I hope you're getting help. Let me know if there is anything I can do from afar.
Imagine if our country had taken this seriously in February. We could have ripped the bandaid off and been done with it by April.

I don't disagree with that. But with that, how many times have we been told the new superbug is going to kill us all and it ended up being a nothing burger? I mean we all know the story of the boy(girl) who cried wolf. The media and CDC/WHO have been doing that for 10 years now. From a confirmed skeptic on all things presented to me, I found it hard to care about another one.
Even with that, the mortality rates are a fraction of what was suggested in Feb/March.
EDIT: yes, I've been seeing my therapist again. I had a fill in that wasn't as good the last couple months.
I liked Bill Mahr's tweet regarding the opening of Major League Baseball yesterday.
"Great to see baseball back! (even the rain delay looks good!) But can someone tell me why we can sit every other seat in an enclosed, air-recycled aluminum tube, ie a plane, but not that way in an open-air stadium? Oh that's right, no good reason at all."

Seems like baseball would have been an easy way to get people in the stadiums - only allow them in one out of every 10 seats. Hell, half the time at Comiskey (White Sox), you're socially distanced anyways. And they could charge a HUGE amount for the tickets too.

I get that things like bathrooms and concessions would also be difficult to keep people far enough away, but if we can shut down a 1/3 of the economy it seems like something we could figure out.
I wonder if it's one of those things where it doesn't make sense, financially, to just let a few people in because of the need for facilities/security/parking kind of thing?

We are a small company, and many of our employees are family members. Add in the necessity of butchering lines having people next to each other, and it was only a matter of time, in spite of good hygiene practices.
Also, I've been in the ER for the past 3 hours, getting fluids and my fever under control. This E36 M3 sucks...

When I dealt with it beginning of March it sucked. Made getting run over by Ferdinand seem like a better alternative. I kept fluids flowing and lots and lots of bed rest for about a week. It was like the flu, but instead of a couple E36 M3ty days it was like 7. We were told at the time "it can't be that because it hasn't hit here yet." so no testing done.

You're not alone. Sleep is something I wish I could dream about! Maybe I need to go back to cigs and beer. Jen and I were talking about it earlier this week (when we were still talking) about parents working and having to virtual school their kids. It's hard enough when you can send them to school, then in the evenings help them with homework and projects after a long day at work. Doing the home thing for a short period you can make work. Long term it's not feasible. People just can't.

I would guess that is part of it. Can the financial logistics of the stadium work with known limited attendance numbers? Still... it would be nice if they could figure out a number to at least break even so those service folks can get some income.

Not true. If it had been taken seriously in February, it would have just delayed the rise. The same number of people are going to get this disease, whether they get it all today, or spread it out over the next couple of years.
There will be a lower death toll if it gets spread out, so hospitals can handle the load.
This disease is not going away anytime soon.

The Pirates have been playing in 25% full (or less) capacity stadiums for decades, even before we took on their millions in debt from Three Rivers Stadium and gave them PNC park. Somehow still profitable enough to not get rid of the team that couldn't win the pennant with a genie in a magic lamp.

I've said the same thing and been chastised for being a science denier.Or grandma killer or whatever. This is out there. People will get infected. I vote we pull the berkeleying bandaid off and let the chips fall where they may. If that means my entire family is wiped out by this then so be it.
You only get so many days here, spending them scared, hiding and miserable are not the way I want to use them.
Hang in there guys. I think the best we can all do is try to stay sane, and do our [tiny] part to help get this over with as quickly as possible.
mtn (Forum Supporter) said:Imagine if our country had taken this seriously in February. We could have ripped the bandaid off and been done with it by April.
I think it would have to take it a little more seriously than it does currently, but yes, in general I agree. New Zealand went into lockdown March 19-21 and declared the country COVID free June 8th. If we took it seriously, we could have done the same.

No. Not even close. We aren't an island country, limited in size, population and population density. We would have had to build walls on both borders over night (and we know how well THAT went over) and manned them with deadly force 24/7 to have any chance of the same result. ALL business and commerce would have required to stop. NZ is what, 4M people? Thats how many positive cases we have had in the US. They're 1.5% of our population, surrounded by water on 103k square miles. we're 328M people in 3.9M square miles with two land borders thousands of miles long.
What works for a small island nation was not going to work here.
And with that I've said my peace. Im tired. I hope something I said made someone think or helped in some small manner.
Stay strong everyone. Think of the things you can control. Work hard to make those things as good as you can. As stated, this response actually gives many of us much more idle time than we're used to. Idle time is awful in general, worse if you're worrying about something.
For me, one of the best feelings is taking a moment and looking back at a job well done. Work hard, do a job well, then look back and enjoy it.
Bob - I can't help but notice that your refusal to live in fear (which, btw, I STRONGLY commend you for) also seems to be tightly connected with all the negative aspects of wearing a mask and social distancing. Are you inadvertently focusing on negative things because of your conviction? I know you know this, but focusing only on the negative could have very similar mental effects to living in fear. And tell your wife we think she's incredible. Very few can care that much about others.

New Zealand is an odd comparison. It's an island. (Actually a bunch of islands). With a total population of 5 million (smaller than most major US cities). It's population density is 47 people per sq mile.
That's a LOT different.
But yes, in hindsight there are things we could have done better.
In reply to Robbie (Forum Supporter) :
There's so much going on with this "response" I don't even know where to begin. Politically I'm what's considered a Libertarian. You do you, I do me. We don't tell each other what to do. Gov't should be small and non-intrusive. Questions should be asked on all topics. It spurs discussion. Ignoring another viewpoint is not only idiotic but harmful for the betterment of humanity as a whole.
What we've gotten are gov't using this to reach for more power and control. We've seen fear mongering on a scale I've never seen in my 45 years on this planet. We have shut down ALL discussion that doesn't agree with our viewpoint. And these mandates are just.... *sigh* ..... not the business of the gov't. Same as seatbelts. Do I wear a seatbelt? Have a fire extinguisher? Have plans in place for all sorts of things that we will likely experience? Absolutely. But not because someone told me to.
It's my nature to question authority. One thing dad always liked to remind me was that no one had all the answers and to ask questions. Never blindly believe. Of course that kinda kills my faith options lol
My job sucks. I'm reminded of that every day I get here..... and for the 9 hours I'm here. I'm told by our tin-pot dictators where I can go, what I can do and how I must dress. I don't do well with that.
The good news is I can still drive my car/truck/whatever. For now. Until they close gas stations for public safety or something. So tomorrow I'm headed to a city I truly despise to drop off a Miata to a friend who's feeding me the only good thing to ever come out of that city. Deep Dish. There are good nuggets here and there but they are getting fewer and farther between them.
