I'd be looking at farm stores, but you'd still probably have to be looking at equivalents and not name brands.
Should at least be able to get you down into the gallon(s) range.
Tractor supply, rural king, farm family home, most equipment rental places and farm stores should have it by the gallon or 5 gallon. Could trying calling the local hydraulic hose place or equipment mechanic as well.
i swear last time I needed hydraulic oil i used ATF. That was for my quickjack
MSC has Mobil DTE25. Not sure what the smallest they carry (I bought it in 5 gal pails), but I am sure they can source it for you if there is a smaller size available.
Call them if it is not on the website.

DTE25 is so light that feels like ATF and can probably be replaced with it. The machines I used them were kind of expensive and not worth the risk though.

Also check local oil distributors. Since you're sourcing multiple brands you'll likely have to find multiple to cover the list.

I think he only needs one. Those are all the different brand his machine will take. At least on CNC machines you will find a list like that with different options to use.
But yeah, a local dist will be able to supply and cross reference more options as well.
FLAPS carries it as well. AW46 is a fairly standard weight.

Yeah just the one. Probably will be good for the next decade or so.

What he's looking for is an AW46 hydraulic fluid. So that's anti wear hydraulic with an ISO VG (Viscosity grade) of 46 centiStokes at 40C. Most ATF is in the 32 range, with some of the newer low viscosity ATF's being in the 20's.
Would it work? Sure it would, but oil is spec's for a reason. Rule of thumb for hydraulic fluids, if it's indoors and temp controlled, use 46, otherwise, 32. AW10, 22, and 68 are used but far less common. All the specs are available on the material data sheet.

Especially for hydraulic fluids, NEVER go lower than specified. If you need to use something not the specified grade, you go up in vis to the next. Lubrication 101.
Trying to compare ISO grades to SAE is problematic as they are tested at different temperatures. 40*C for ISO and 100*C for SAE. Most ATF's fresh should start as a thin 30, thick 20 weight SAE that will sheer down into a thin 20, which would put it in the neighborhood of an ISO 46-68 depending on formulation and additives.

As I said in my first post though I am specifically looking for NOT a 55 gallon drum. I need like 5 gallons or less. If they will fill a 5 gallon drug for me, great :)
Last time I needed to source some esoteric-spec hydraulic oil, I got in contact with my local Schaeffer Oil distributor. They got me what I needed within the week. I did have to order by the 5 gallon pail, though. But even then, it was less than $100. Of course that was ~14 years ago.

Just an idea. If you cannot find a source, see if Petroliance has a customer of theirs that buys the grade you need and they are willing to share their info. I would then call the customer and offer to swing by and buy a gallon. I did that before with a different product.
