I'm looking for a way to flush-mount an iPhone in a very secure way. Pretend you wanted to mount an iPhone to the dash of a rally car or something like that.
I found a flush mount for the wall if your house, but the phone just sat in it, I want something that will HOLD it in, but allow it to be easily removed. Too much to ask?

Thank you, you answered a question I hadn't asked.
Why is that when faced with a problem you look for the most complicated solution first instead of the simplest?
I think that a SpiderPodium may work well for you. I have one for my iPad and I think that the iPad is a little bit to heavy for it to be considered very secure but it may work well for you're lighter iPhone. What are you trying to mount it to?

I may not have 'splained what I'm looking for very well. I don't have a lot of places to put my iPhone when I drive, and dash/center console space is at a premium. There's a nice spot in the headliner by the map lights that is the perfect size and angle. I'd like to cut the headliner and put a holder like THIS but more form-fitting. Something that'll hold it from falling out of the headliner while I drive.
Life proof case and one of their snap-in holders modified to fit your spot. Not cheap, but sometimes you gotta pay to play.

Ohhh, your idea intrigues me.....
I'll start doing some figuring.

Seems like it would be pretty easy to fabricate something up for this. Couple pieces of wood (or metal if you're a neat welder), some foam/padding, and you'd be set.

- Buy Friendly Plastic
- heat in boiling water until soft like runny clay
- mold to shape around phone, incorporate mounting tabs
- let cool
- Install in car
- insert phone into holder
- watch all teh fine laydeez swoon
...or, buy a grip-go from the "as seen on TV" section of the local Walgreens/CVS/Rite Aide etc

Hey DrBoost, I have these phone mounts at the bike shop. You can eliminate the clamp and use the hole to mount it directly to the headliner.

Ohhh, that's very close to my idea. My idea would be a box that I could flush mount in the headliner. I don't expect I'll find that though. If I don't, how do I buy one of these babies from you?
Shoot me a PM and I'll hook you up. The only thing I think you will have to fab is a tab to pull the release switch which is located on the back of the unit. Shouldn't be too hard though. They are very sturdy mounts.

I actually took a chance and bought one of those. It works quite well, I was shocked.

How does the phone attach to it?

Hate to be a PITA, do you have a pic of the back of the unit? I just want to figure out what I'm going to have to do here.

That green pad is...I dont want to call it sticky, but grippy somehow. It doesnt have adhesive, but the phone sticks to it. And not in a "I'll stick for now and fly off any minute" kind of way, it REALLY sticks but you can still peel the phone off to remove it. The infomercials describe the surface as a bunch of microscopic suction cups. Dunno how true that is but it works.
I was skeptical if it would work with my lifeproof case since there are some voids to the back so its not making 100% contact but it sticks on there fine and holds solid. I've used in the the Abarth and had the phone stuck there for hours while tossing the car around turns and such, for a $10 product I'm somewhat impressed with it.

I'm not at work right now, but I can get you a pic. If you look at the last pic in the link, it shows the bottom side view. From there you can see the red slider button that sticks out. To release the phone you pull down toward the bottom of the phone and the side arms pop open and release the phone. The red button is spring loaded and will pop back into place. I think all you would need is a slim metal tab with a hole to fit over the red button and a right angle that you can fit your finger on to pull down. Once it is mounted to something the tab can't eacape. Hopefully that paints a detailed enough picture until I can snap a pic for you.
