Isn't Action Park around there somewhere? You should go there. That place sounds awesome.

Catch a Spirit airlines flight into AC airport and you can then drive to any number of other Jersey beaches which are tons and tons better than AC. Ocean City is close by, so that would be my first suggestion. You can then make the 20 minute or less hop over to AC to check it out for an afternoon. AC has changed dramatically over the past several decades. When I was a kid, we used to go all the time and walk the boardwalk. I still think the area right where the casinos are is safe enough for a day trip to the beach, and that part of the boardwalk is OK. But AC as a whole is a mega dump.
the Casinos are reaping what they have been sowing. They have spent so much money making people think that if you step foot outside, you will get mugged or killed.. that everyone believes it.
Yes, AC is a dump, but I have walked all over that town and nobody except for the occasional panhandler has ever bothered me (and they cracked down on them). The beaches are still relatively nice, but I would not leave my stuff sitting on the sand to go for a quick swim like I would in Ocean City or even Brigantine.
Hands down the nicest beaches at the shore belong to Ocean City. Not the biggest, that distinction belongs to wildwood,... you can die of thirst trying to trek back to the boardwalk from the water's edge.. but OC's are clean (they rake them every morning) patrolled by police and life guards, and are just the right size to make it to the water without seeing mirages
"action park" is now "mountain Creek water park" and is three hours away from Atlantic City, actually North of NYC

I still stream Philly radio on my way too or from work. I heard about the incidents that happened over Memorial Day weekend in Wildwood. Wish I could say it surprised me, but it was the drunken teen hangout mecca back in the 80's and early 90's when I used to...uhhh...sample the local flavors. But we never trashed the beach like they do today.
