Who's good with woodgrain ID?

I meant edge.   Long, narrow side of the board. Sorry, should have been clearer.  If it's flat-sawn beech, there should probably be visible rays (hyphens)  in the edge grain.

Yeah, that's beech.  100%, no doubt in my mind.  I work with it a lot in cutting boards.  It's neat stuff- the grain is interesting with the rays/hyphens, it's hard, it's cheap, and it's sustainable.  It works great as negative space that you can intersperse with exotics or darker stuff.

Well, it's now mixed in with black walnut, norway maple, hickory, reclaimed american chestnut, cherry, and some other woods.  There is white oak and ash hanging around as well, but that's just firewood, so we won't count that.
