Sitrep: Genie garage door opener, likely at least 10 years old. Safety sensor LEDs are solid on/beam is good and aligned. Door will open normally if I manually disconnect from the screw drive and lower it then re-connect to the screw drive. Hit the close button and it moves 6 inches, stops, and reverses back open. What am I missing???
Something is binding? Will the screw drive operate with the door detached from it?
Limit switches need adjusting?
Screw drive operates fine connected or disconnected,
When hitting the button to close, it moves about 6 inches past the limit switch (which eliminates the switch as the issue), stops and reverses back open.

My ancient craftsman does similar things, has for about 20 years. Push the button, it opens 6 inches, push again and it closes, push a third time and it opens entirely.
Not much of a problem because I could never get a car in my garage, and now I have a lawn guy so no tractor. I just always thought it was weird, and maybe this thread can shine some light on why.
I forget the exact mode of failure on mine, but one of my Chamberlain Liftmasters quit working. I couldn't find anything wrong with it and ordered a logic board from someplace online, replaced it, and it's been fine since.
So if it isn't binding and all else fails, maybe logic board?
Edit: Most of these have two safety modes: one is the light beam on the floor, the other is load sensing. If the effort required to move the door is beyond a certain level, the door will stop and reverse. This is adjustable, and is properly set just above the level required to open and close a properly aligned and lubed door.

Mine does that when the door binds a bit going down and I need to relube the tracks.
Does it close if you gently help it past the spot that it normally stops? When mine binds if I pull on it slightly until it is past that spot it closes fine.
In reply to EvanB :
It reverses before I can get hold of it to help pull it down. Load limit sensor could very well do it. I'll lube things a bit check that out tonight.
Update: unlatched door, re-latched it halfway down, hit the button. Went down normally. Tried a series of partial stops between 1/4 down and 1/4 up, worked normally. Tried full down to full up, and back again. Worked normally. Not sure what to make of this.

I think I saw something like this in a movie
Your garage is not built on an Indian burial ground is it?
My garage door opens or closes about 3-4 feet then stops. I think it has something to do with the number of times my wife has backed into it. Maybe I will try what worked for yours.

I think the name is pretty clear: garage door opener.
The garage door closer costs extra.

I just went through this same thing. It is the sequencer board. It was an $80 part, and a new unit was $178 with wifi and much quieter. I figured the part, plus wifi upgrade would be about the same as a new unit, so bit the bullet.

I had a bind at the pin from the arm to the door. If the arm slid to one side or the other (ie not centered) it would bind.
The pin near the red arrow at the end of the black arm.
My garage door opener does this occasionally, usually when its really cold. It's a Chamberlain Liftmaster, so this might not work with other makes, but I found that if I hold the close/open button down it will ignore all the safety features (light beam, load sensor) so when it's acting up I just hold the button down until it's closed instead of just pushing the button and walking away. This is with the button in the garage, I don't know if it works with the remote controls or not.
