Interesting thing happened yesterday. Tried to forward an email to the wifes email while in the car. Won't go. Get an error message the "connection to the outgoingserver 'mail.tds.net' has failed".
What does thateven mean? They were working fine before. This just started this week.what am I missing? I've got the setting set to use cellular data etc. iPhail 8 and its both mine and the wifes
Drive by an elementary or Jr. High school and ask a kid to fix it for you. You can’t. I can’t. I doubt the dealer can either. But I bet there’s an 11 year old that has it figured out.

Restart your modem and wifi
Have you tried googling the error message + iPhone 8?
That's usually a good place to start when troubleshooting.
True enough. Except all the schools are closed so walking up to random kids on the sidewalk may get me a long converse with a nice police officer

It ONLY works connected to any WiFi source. Work. McDonald's, home. If I turn off WiFi on the phone it won't send
Do they send email while connected to wifi? It sounds like a password/username issue. Even if you didn't change anything, I'd go through these steps: ttps://tdstelecom.com/support/email/device-setup-iphone.html.
It also mentioned on their website that the gmail app doesn't work with it, in case you're using that.

It's a generic message that doesn't really tell us which of the dozens of networking problems it could actually be. "Your call could not be completed as dialed" but for your email.
If you've restarted your phone already, it's probably worth a call to your phone carrier for support.

sends fine on email. Recieves on or off wifi. Using the mail function on the iPhail aswe have for the last 10 years.
Then again, this is the E36 M3ty company that is my only choice for internet that charges $73/onth for 5meg DSL
This doesn't answer the why, but it may fix it: I'd delete the email accounts from your phone and add them back.
I would try closing all the apps and turning it off and back on again. Long shot, I know, but maybe it works.
hard restart had no effect,

Have you hit some sort of data limit with your phone plan?
Can you surf the web when not on wifi?
In reply to John Welsh :
Everything but email works fine offline. I even receive mail. I just can't send or forward

You might go into the mobile setup in your connections and make sure you are set on 'roam'. I haven't used an iPhone for years, but it is in there somewhere.
Edit: guess I should also ask if internet access works while not on wifi...
Go to settings/mail and make sure cellular data is turned on, if it is, hit accounts, tap on the account, then tap on it again on the next page, look under outgoing server, tap that, tap primary server, make sure use ssl is on.
If either is off, thats the issue, if they're both on, no idea :)

All those things are as they should be.I'm wonderingif our crappy provider just no longer supports it in some way?
tds.net local phone provider. TDS Telecom

Sounds like they may be not allowing SMTP from the range of IPs your cellular carrier uses, possibly as a result of abuse reports in the past (not meaning you or others on your plan)
I'd open a ticket with mail provider support.

One way to test, would be if you have mobile hotspot option, is to connect your laptop to phone hotspot and try to send an email from laptop while connected to hotspot.
