Do they make them run to Lowes or the FLAPS for parts?
If those are the auto tech national championships, shouldn't they be working on a BMW Mini or a new Beetle? Or maybe they should have to assemble a Subaru engine and whoever's build blows up last wins? 
How about the competitive nail driving championships?
So, its like the Skills competition I assist with but instead of students in High school / post secondary school its people from in the trades for a while and televised.

I say we also make them build a race for less than $2000–wait a minute ... 
I guess it’s not unlike MS Excel competitions.

The original Paris Olympics had all sorts of weird events - firefighting, artillery, ballooning, fishing, mail delivery, and more. It's too bad the modern Olympics takes itself too seriously.

no but you do get bonus points if you show up when you say you will
no points lost for over stating the level of difficulty, making it sound really scary, over estimating the job, etc.

Yeah I feel like they should all be doing Audi timing chains and there should be a mischevious pug that runs around stealing 10mm sockets during the competition.
