Seems to tie in with the Mayans, haha! Hah? Seriously, a little frightening.

If you want to tie it in with the mayan thing, it will end on a friday

I dunno; seems like the principle of entropy would indicate it "started to end" shortly after it was created..

damnit, we're getting screwed. If we lived in a fair world, it would end monday morning.

shouldn't this be in Off-Topic btw?

You know, part of me is glad that the press seems to think the Large Hardon Collider is going to blow up the earth. Because at least they're talking about science.

Quote from article: "On Wednesday, Dr Evans will fire up the Large Hadron Collider, a 17-mile-long doughnut-shaped tunnel that will smash sub-atomic particles together at nearly the speed of light."

Too bad the particles won't have hardly the energy of some that continuously bombard the earth every day.....

If the earth was gonna get blowed up by particles, it would already be blowed up

string theory....never underestimate the destructive power of bored electrons playing with scientists.

Uh, if they fire it up and it only eats France, then what? Could we stand in Germany and lob our nuclear waste and other garbage in the hole? Or, if they fire it up and it destroys the Earth and our solar system, would that mean that I don't have to come in to work the next day? Would my student loans still be due?

Just trying to look at the bright side here.

It doesn't matter. Even if it does end on wednesday someone will complain to me about the buses being late on thursday.

Or are they talking about a REALLY bad porno?

pssst, its a haDRon collider, not a HARD ON collider, the first is interesting, the second just defy the laws of man (at least straight man)

I know what it is.

But every time I read it I read it as Large Hardon Collider, and it's funnier that way anyway, so why not?

I've listened to several scientists discussing this. These are scientists who will have access, and get to try their own experiments.

The thing that bothers me is the universal sense that these educated men REALLY don't know what will happen. They are not suggesting something catastrophic, but they don't seem to know what to expect.

Isn't that a rather large investment for an unknown result?

Be like dumping an unknown clear chemical into your $10,000 purpose built race motor with no idea what the liquid is because it MIGHT go fast.

These scientists (3 different ones I listened to in depth) really seem to be that clueless. I'm a little uneasy with that approach. Seems to beg for end of the world nutcase responses.

Remember, at one point "science" was also convinced that the universe revolved around the earth.Point? You'll never know until you ask.

However, knowing if the world is going to end by Thursday or just BEGIN to end on Wednesday in a process that takes four years is important to my budget planning process.
