I've got the Asus RT-N66U, one of the best , and it was ridiculously priced either. Routers are one of those things I don't want to be replacing every 2 years because they lack functionality. I hope I don't have to replace this one for at least 5 years.

You could upgrade to the newest Asus RT-AC66u, which is the same unit just configured to also run the Wireless AC band. This would probably give you at least 8 years, maybe more. There aren't many wireless devices running AC yet.

Or drop down to the older RT-N16 for something cheaper but still very functional.

A proper diagnostic probe would be prudent to throwing money at a failure. Have you had a chat with your router to see what is bumming it out? Tried firmware upgrade?

The old unit is a Linksys that is probably eight years old. Time for an upgrade to more than the firmware. PHeller, where do you buy that router? How hard to set up?

I just had an apple time capsule die. The HD backup part died a while ago, now the router inexplicably is dead after we had two weeks away over the holidays. My problem is that it's the router that I connect with for garage internet- the airport express was set up to "share" the connection with the time capsule. Can't seem to do the same thing with other brand routers.

Go with a refurb'd Apple AirPort Extreme (right here). For $85 you get what is still one of the best WiFi routers around (the new version is better, but 2x the price). Great range, easy setup, just works.

My old unit was a Linksys G 2.4 . I am not a gamer or heavy user, although a smart TV is in my future. Will these run on this AC band stuff?

For serious, get this one. The RT-N66i or RT-AC66u. I got one at home and it worked so well I added one at the office. It's fast, has tons of range, and is very reliable. It's basically the ideal home / small office router.
