Canoe full of stupid.

i made it better for you...
Sure it started with a canoe, but I'd never support it because of the history and the timing of James Bond.
Now if you want to create another James Bond type of character who begins in the modern era then sure.

The modern James Bond movies are already very well separated from the classics. Sure they make reference to the old stuff, but they certainly do not pretend to be taking place in that era.
Make a JB movie set in the 50's, yes it would be silly. Make a movie based in modern times, entirely reasonable, even if they use stories based on the original books (e.g. Casino Royal).
Ever watch I Spy with Bill Cosby?
Yeah, it could work quite well. The color of the skin doesn't matter as long as the acting and presence is correct.
Think more Denzel than Snipes.
What about the CIA operative that Bond ran into in the last couple of movies? A Felix Leiter series could be pretty cool. Certainly better than the proposed spin off of Jinx that was passed around a while back.
As I understand, there are rumors of Idris Elba being looked at to play the role next. Having seen him in Luther, I think that would be a great choice and he could do the role more credit than Craig.
I've seen a fan theory that "James Bond" is simply the code name for whoever is assigned the role of 007 at the time. That would certainly explain why James Bond can change his age, behavior, etc even when other characters like M and Q stay the same. Casino Royale kind of hinted at this - "Hey, this guy's been promoted to 007" - but didn't specifically say the name went with the job. That could be explicitly written in, and would certainly explain a black James Bond without starting the series completely from scratch.
There's quote a few black actors who could play suave, secret agent, and British. Or, for that matter, a Felix Leiter spinoff could be cool, as turboswede said.

An Eastern European bad guy slips a nickle sized explosive into JG's burrito and he's unwittingly saved when he passes said roll of deliciousness to his scantily clad, voluptuous companion who, not having JG's deft burrito eating skill, suffers "burrito blowout". The device, along with a large amount of greasy, beany goodness, drops onto the pristine interior of his Jaguar F-Type convertible and begins beeping loudly...

Hmm..with a little work in wardrobe, I think the guy could pull it off. You're right about one thing, though..black or white, he's got to be British. I wonder if Mr. Elba has an "upper class" accent in his personal repertoire. Bond's a pretty posh guy, he shouldn't have a detective's street accent.
EDIT: I forgot to thank you for the new show to check out..(insert thumbs up icon here)
Luther is kind of a cool show. I bought the DVDs. I just wish the crazy chick would quit with the ducklips.

In interviews, his normal accent is urban London. But if he can do a Baltimore street thug, he can do a posh accent. That's like asking a Manhattanite actor if he can do an upstate accent. Besides, he's a British actor, so you know he's done Shakespeare.

You're very welcome.

ROFL! Yeah, you're right. Y'know, the more we talk about it, the more I'd like to see them attempt it. I'm a Bond franchise fan. Still my favorite N64 game:

And the theme was my ringtone from the first time I got a cel. Hey, when I was a kid, a phone you could carry with you was something that would have been a Q gadget! (insert Maxwell Smart shoe phone joke here) I'm kinda PO'd that my phone company (Virgin) stopped directly selling ringtones and wants me to go through Google. I've actually missed calls on my new phone because I forgot the Bond theme isn't my ringtone anymore.

Now you have my mind going!
Will Smith as Superman? Sophia Vergara as WonderWoman. Carrot Top as Batman. Lucy Liu as The Hulk. George Lopez as Captain America! A good actor should be able to pull off any part well.
Preconceived expectations are sometimes hard to overcome. My problem with a black James Bond would be that I have a real hard time visualizing a black British actor. Maybe David Harewood from Homeland!?!
