Back in the 80's and 90's, I was very into music. We had an amazing alternative-rock station in Pittsburgh (100.7 WXXP!) that was introduced me to a lot of new bands. (I was the kid who was into Depeche Mode when everyone else was listening to KISS.) As I went to concerts and made friends through skateboarding, I learned about more bands and got into punk and ska and other stuff. I went to college with REM posters when most kids had never heard of them. I spent time trading cassettes from the Cure and Smiths underground stuff, and then I was active on Napster and Limewire, finding new stuff all the time. I was that obnoxious guy who said "I've been listening to them for 2 years" when bands finally hit the radio.
Then Pittsburgh lost the X and all we heard on the terrestrial radio was 70's rock or top 40. Then I had kids and got a job and just kinda fell into listening to my CDs and then MP3s. With all of the sound-alike rap and cookie-cutter pop/country, I kinda lost interest in new music. I picked up new bands from time to time (my daughter got me into Panic! and Arctic Monkeys) but my band list did not grow much over the past 30 years.
Within the last month, I was letting Alexa find some music for me and came across Great Van Fleet. I was so happy to hear some new music that I really liked from an unknown band! They are NEVER played on the radio here, and I have never seen them on TV or in general pop-culture. Then I Googled them. Formed in 2012, several Grammys, SNL performance, lots of tv appearances, live tours, etc. Man, I really do live under a rock. I'd go see them live, but I am sure that they will be too loud, and beer will be too expensive and the parking will be a nightmare and don't get me started on concert traffic...
I think they are from a town just south of me. They were played locally for quite a few years around here, glad to see they are making it.
I don't think anyone in the band is named Greta.

If you like Greta and are out of the loop on new(ish) music, try Rival Sons and Royal Blood, too.
or you could listen to Led Zeppelin
and yes, get off my lawn.

"Which one is Pink?"
@AngryCorvair: It's like Led Zeppelin is still putting out new music, what's not to like about that?

Frankenmuth.
Although there are plenty of gig stops between Detroit and Chicago.
I prefer "Broken Bells" to "Stairway to Heaven" as an extended rock and roll track. The latest album is that good.
Led Zeppelin and Simon & Garfunkel are the two bands I can listen to their entire catalogue. Not a dud in the bunch. Their "Greatest Hits" albums is everything they have ever done.
Greta van Fleet is good. I'm like OP, I used to listen to the alt-rock stations that were big in the 90's. Napster was my gig. There's a TuneIn station called "Alternative Rewind" that punches all the buttons for me.
Check out Drive By Truckers too, if you like alternative country/ southern rock.
The best concert I've even been to, to this day, was Violent Femmes. They played my college student union back in the late 90's, tickets were ten bucks, and they rocked the place.

The story about the kid going into the music store because he'd heard a couple Led Zeppelin songs and wanted his first album.
Flipping through all the albums and not knowing which one to get, he asks the shop keeper, "Do they have, like, a 'greatest hits' album?"
"Son, they're *all* greatest hits albums."

Oh man, couple months back, saw Violent Femmes (for the first time) and Flogging Molly (for like, the fifth). Damn that was a great show.

Nope. That's fair.
Honestly, I think everything up through Physical Graffiti is fantastic, but studio albums after that lacked the consistent greatness.

I will agree with that assessment.
In a surprising turn of events, I'm 100% with Angry on this one.
Nothing exactly wrong with GVF, other than if I wanted to listen to Zep, I'll just listen to Zep.
I actually cooked this up a couple years ago:
I'm with you, there aren't a ton of "new" bands I like. It seems like rock/country/pop are all moving to the same kind of generic sound.
I will say, I took myself, fiancee, dad, and best friend to go see Gojira Friday night. Alien Weaponry was heavy and had a HUGE sound for a 3-piece band, I didn't care for Knocked Loose......their singer had that constant Whitechapel kind of screech........I like mostly growly lyric bands, but they were intolerable, which sucks because the band sounded good. Of course Gojira was berkeleying awesome.
I typically gravitate toward the biggest/best bands of a certain sub-genre, then the others just sound like crummy ripoffs, so I don't listen to a lot of new stuff.
Listening to GVF was what made me realize just what it is about Zeppelin I don't like. I'll take GVF over Zep every time, and the only Zep album I can really tolerate is Physical Graffiti
I can't comment on new Vs old music as I've never considered myself musically knowledgeable, but I will comment on radio stations. When I moved here to SE Mi from the UK in 94 I was amazed at the quality and quantity of great music stations. 89X, WCSX, WLLZ, the WRIF etc. Since then WLLZ closed as an active and classic rock station in the 90's, WCSX has turned into another awful corporate crap station with the same two dozen classics playing on repetition to the point you've heard everything they have to offer after 48 hours. 89X has suffered the worst fate of all turning into a country station. WRIF has been adsorbed by the same faceless E36 M3show that got CSX, although they seem to have a little more autonomy with their selection. The thing is the choice of stations and the selections those stations play has become more and more limited over the last 20 years. The only time I ever listen to the radio anymore is for NPR, if I want music it's Spotify these days and I can tune what I listen too. With streaming so easy and popular I truly wonder about the future of FM radio at all.
I listen to new music, but it tends to be from the bands I've listened to for decades. I bought the new Iron Maiden record released a couple of months ago. It's effing amazing. I love it. When Tool gets around to releasing a new record, I buy it. I'm hoping to see them live when they come to Philly next year.
My old bass player still listens to real new music, finding bands nobody has heard of. Some of them I like. Some I've seen live as well. Cinema Cinema is a fun band to listen to.
The first time I heard GVF, it just didn't appeal to me.

Well yes, I listen to new music from bands I like. I thought more of the point was new bands.
I really like the new Deftones and Gojira albums. Looking forward to the new Mastodon double-album. Also need to pick up the new Cannibal Corpse album.
I'm just kind of so insulated in my own world of cars, iRacing, the fun lego projects, NBA, my fiancee, I miss nearly all of it.

Thank You, it had to be said.
People that don't listen to new music are missing out. There is a lot of enjoyable music being made do you don't have to listen to the same 12 songs everyday
Wally just said it best.
In regards to Zeppelin, I can tolerate later stuff more than early stuff. Houses thru Out Door are more listenable to me. First 4 albums have been played to death. Also, Presence isn't as bad an album as people put it out to be.
Black Sabbath does more for me than Zeppelin does. There I said it!
