You want to know what made me feel better than anything I have ever done? I donated $500 to a homeless mission.

Yeah, the over the top commercialism is pretty irritating.

I'm looking forward to Christmas though. The entire family, including all my cousins and their kids, will be at the family farm this year. Should be close to 50 of us there for the weekend. Both houses will be packed, plus a couple of campers and a couple of people staying on my parents boat. Lots of food and family fun. There is sure to be an oyster roast and shrimp fry, not to mention all the turkey, ham and desserts. I'm getting fatter just thinking about it.

Christmas morning with 14 kids in one house and 12 in the other will be a hoot. Not to mention we will fill up half the local church for the Christmas Eve service. It's not often we can all get together at the same time. Some of them I haven't seen in over a year and it's been close to 5 since we all came home at the same time.

As far as the lights. We put up a few, that is to say my wife does. She also hangs wreaths and garland from the porch. I used to spend hours putting them up and taking them down. I'm past that. Last year the tree didn't go up until the week before and came down at New Years.

This. I can ignore the commercialism pretty easily, but every year on Christmas Eve my Dad's entire family gets together. Usually between 24 and 30 people. Day after Christmas I'm going out of state to my cousins 21st birthday, we should have a good crowd in there of folks I haven't seen in 2 years, and those that I haven't seen in 2 years I've only seen 3 times in probably 7.

Then we had 26 people at our house for Thanksgiving, 8 of whom were under the age of 11. That was a blast. At least 5 of those people I hadn't seen in 2 years minimum.

People get out of their freakin' minds. Love family, love being with them, like pretty lights, love cold weather etc but the rampant commercialism makes me want to hurl.

Yep. We have christmas at our house on the 24th (I'm 30 wife is 27, no kids).........we've told all the adults to quit buying each other junk, and let's just spend it on my 3 nephews.

No doubt. I give more in time, money, and "stuff" throughout the year than my friends that make 2-3X what I do. I don't think I get "sucked in" by the "commercial" aspect, I just like giving gifts to people when I know it's something they'll really enjoy; especially when it's something they can't or won't buy for themselves. I'm such a freaking tightwad 364 days a year, that it feels good to "let go" sometimes. My favorite artist does a gallery sale for Christmas every year, and always does crazy, AWESOME xmas tree ornaments, so it's nice to throw a few bucks her way too. I am rambling.
