Fortunately this isn't tinnitus. I'm huge on earplugs. It's something I woke up with today, though.
Are your ears nice and clean? Is it a the sound or the feel of water?
A year or so back my ear just became so congested I had to irrigate it a few times a day for about a week before I got full hearing back.
In reply to David S. Wallens:
Tilt your head toward that ear and hop or shake your sideways head vertically and vigorously. It'll work its way out.
I get water far into my cranium every time I swim now. Apparently my ear-holes have loosened up and become more inviting with age.
I've had tinnitus for years. God I wish there was a cure. I also get water in the canal too. I can usually get that out though.
It's probably your natural defenses trying to drown out the family of Wolf spiders that moved in while you were sleeping.
Spending several years in the ER I saw more earwax buildups than I would have thought possible. Have someone with an otoscope take a peek in your noggin, might be a simple cleanout.
After a scuba diving incident, I have suffered ringing and "crickets" in my left ear for over 20 years. I can't image how amazing pure silence would be.
HEAR THIS: Get it checked out! DO NOT IGNORE IT! Ignored Ear infections lead to surgeries and issues that YOU DONT WANT.

I'll say it again, get your ass to a medical professional! Hearing is one of the senses that's easily ignored, until it's too late.

That might not be a bad idea. I had a good friend go from mild discomfort to totally deaf in one ear from an infection. Total time from initial discomfort to deaf was 3 days. A dose of antibiotics would have cleared it up almost instantly.
Get to the Doctor immediately. I just recently had a bought of sudden deafness in one ear. Started out just as you are describing. Was stone deaf in that ear 24 hrs later. Went to family doc then ENT. Put on prednisone for two weeks and got 90 of my hearing back.
Don't wait. ENT told me he had another 50 year old patient have the same thing around the time I did. They didn't get their hearing back.

FTFY. I have the same thing going on, it's been 3 weeks now. SWMBO used the boroscope and didn't see anything, doc used an otoscope and still didn't see anything. Apparently it's some sort of congestion sickness and it triply sucks for me because I do have tinnitus in both ears. Makes me want to gouge my eardrums out with a spork.
Speaking of ears, I was wearing these anytime I go to a concert. Now I just keep them on my keychain so I always have them.
In reply to David S. Wallens:
I usually rock Hearos when going to shows. I used to wear them at gigs, and they seem to let the good sound in and not muffle tonality too badly. They looked similar to those.
In reply to SilverFleet:
I just use cheap earplugs from the dollar store now. I found that I can vary the tone/volume enough by pulling them out slightly, or pushing them in a bit further.
