...when you have multiple photos of your car and your friend's car together, but no photos of yourself with said friend. Seriously I have multiple photos of my friend Chris' Miata with mine (we both owned Mariner Blue 1990s that we bought 2 weeks apart despite living 900 miles away from each other) as well as the Fiat he replaced it with, but no photos of us personally.
You do a fly and drive from NJ to CA for a Honda S600 and bring a spare water pump because you know it's a known weak spot.
When you think of expenses in terms of race car tires. As in: My wife want's a new carpet in the living room. It's going to cost two full sets of tires!
When you tell your wife that half of the stimulus check will cover the Challenge entry, the 4:27 gears AND the hotel
When you have people come to stay at your house from all parts of the world - just to drive the local roads...
your wife asks how long have you known them
your answer : "19 years on forum"
where every friend you have is a story from a car forum.
wife : I have never heard you talk to them on the phone or saw their pics?
you answer your wife: I talk to them on forum and have each friend listed on your phone contact by the car they own... and have pics of their cars but no pics of them
when you forget your friends real name, and call then by their forum names
when you remember important dates in life (marriage, kids birth , houses purchased , jobs had), by which car you had at which time. Ownership of cars become the true marker for your life

You obsess over the first car made by a orphaned brand of automobile....one that hasn't been sold under that name in nearly half a century
....and then spend more than a decade trying to make your own looks-similar version of this car.

Oh god this is true... the wife usually responds "is that how you think of everything? As cars?"
the only response is "yep."
When you find yourself on a website from a car show and when you tell your family that you talked to the restorer Les Canaday, they say who? Then you mention Pete Brock and John Morton and they ignore you.

That was at Steve's European Auto or something. I drive by that often on my way home from work. He had a Jalpa a few weeks ago that I took a detour to go see.
This was in Car Craft or something decades ago, so definitely not mine, but I've been laughing about it ever since. If you write a letter, is it most likely to begin:
a) May it please the Court,
b) I never believed the letters in your magazine until the day I opened my apartment door and saw two Swedish stewardesses and a jar of mayonnaise, or
c) I am the proud owner of...
