In my auto buying searches, I'm usually looking for something relatively common, so its always CL. Now that I'm looking for an e46 wagon that is a little less common I need to look in more places.
CL is great. It's totally buyer beware since you're at the mercy of how honest the seller is being, but I have a pretty good eye for anything that might be wrong.
Ebay has become great for vanilla stuff, but once you start looking at Rocky Road or Rum Raisin it is a bidding war that brings top dollar
AutoTrader should really be renamed "retailforsuckers.com"
Otherwise, I have joined a few more BMW forums looking through their classifieds. Sometimes the problem with forum classifieds are that the "enthusiast owner" really hacked into some stuff with the help of other well-meaning members and may or may not have ruined the car, but they're selling it on a forum because they're hoping for top dollar from someone else who might be as passionate about their gem as they are.
So what are some car-selling sites I'm missing?
Edit: I'd like ideas for good BMW sites for now and good suggestions for future purchases.
Cargurus
Not enthusiast site it but finds 'em.
Cars in BMW CCA ads are usually pretty good, but usually pricey too. That said, I got my 128i through there and the price was quite reasonable, so it does happen.
I've bought 2 of my last 3 cars off Craigslist. Next one will hopefully be from someone who imports cars.
Facebook Marketplace.
A lot of things I was finding easily on Craigslist have migrated over to FB. Ease of use for the seller is nice, but I liked having some anonymity.
I like to look through the classified ads in the back of the newspaper.

Those still exist? When I was a kid, I'd spend hours every Sunday going through them.

Another vote for Facebook marketplace. Seems to be more popular than CL nowadays.

Almost every ad FB Marketplace ever highlights for me looks exactly like a CL scam. Like, a picture of a clean 4-year-old Accord with a $3000 asking price. I admit I haven't really looked into it too much, based on that.

From a market standpoint I find it interesting nobody has mentioned AutoTrader or Cars.com.

AutoTrader is my default car search engine. However, OP is looking for something sort of rare, so while I'd check there too, pickins' would be slim.

I use searchtempest.com to cast a wide net over CL sites.

They seem to be about 90% dealers, at least around here. Depends what you're looking for, if it's something fairly new, those are the best places to look. For older stuff, it's CL/forums/Facespace/etc.

Oy. Mostly because the same car I can find on CL for $4000 is $12,995 on AutoTrader. Like I said in my first post, they should change the name to "retailforsuckers.com"
Cars.com is dealer retail, but worth a look.

FB marketplace occasionally turns up some gems, but around here anyway its still pretty slim. If I search right now for cars I get about 25 and they're mostly somone's white trash lawn ornament pile of rust. As in... "comes with a slant 6 block currently being used as a flower planter"

In reply to klb67 :
Totally forgot about searchtempest. CL lets me search 200 miles but I'm willing to go a bit further.
Edit... just visited. How do I get it to work? I selected BMW 3-series from the pulldown menus and it returned thousands of Z, 5, X, and 7 series. Doesn't seem to work.
So I went to the AutoTempest pop-out and it brings up CL regional pages that say "search error: syntax"
I think its easier to just go to the CL sites for those areas and do it manually. Am I missing something?
