Hi All,
El Rabbitto's from hub assemblies are worn out. The early 90mm hubs are much more flex prone and the castings just wear out. I've put 4 front wheel bearings in during ~3k miles of driving/racing.
I'd like to upgrade to the 100mm hub assemblies that came on the big bumper Cabriolet and 16v Rocco. Before I make a long road trip to an unknown boneyard i thought I'd check the GRM hoarder inventory.
Appreciate it all.
I have the hubs, I have nothing else.
i have boxes of MKI parts from when I was into them.

as in
Or the assembly like this? The ugly case section that captures the bearing is what I think is toast.
Hubs only, had them for a swap on a caddy years ago

If I may piggy back on this, I am looking for mk1/2 hubs, brakes, and uprights with two short cv axles with the 90mm inner bolt pattern. At least i think that the inner cv joint will bolt to a Type 1 Air cooled transaxle...
In reply to 84FSP :
Check me on this, but isn't the 90mm vs 100mm just on the transmission flange for the size of the CV for the axle? I thought all mk1 hubs were on the same bearing and the same casting; you did not get a real bearing until mk2, mk3, etc. I am not saying your knuckle isn't toast, just that you won't get a bigger-bearing/beafier-casting unless you move out of the mk1 family.
I would love to have a mk1 knuckle with a larger bearing myself, as switching to mk3 hubs causes bump steer issues on stock-ride-height-cars. Lowered and mk3 can be perfect, but I like rough roads.

The bearing is the same from early to late MkI. The late housings are beefier with more gusseting and the clearance get for 100mm axles.
Agreed that the MkII are beefier and have bigger bearings. I’m trying to stay class legal as well as avoid changing offsets, ball joints, and tie rods.
For RossD - I have a pair of 88 Jetta GLI 8V hubs/uprights/strut housings modded for GC coilover hats. I’m out of Cincy.

Really now.
For realdo
Got any Westmoreland build fuse boxes/instrument clusters/other wiring? Have a GTI with all that stuff kinda fried-ish.
Ah, that’s right. The 100mm parts I have are the output from the trans. I think they were from a mkii, I’ve work out knuckles before but I don’t think there is a difference between early and late.
I’ve been wrong before, it’s been a number of nights since I even owned a VW.

Actually may, I have a couple complete harnesses from cars I cut up iirc.

LOL - apparently a GRM VW sale/swap section is in order...
In reply to 84FSP :
Thank you for the clarification. I will see if I can find some for both of us. Cabriolets are fairly common still, out west.
Knurled, PM sent, just for backup.

Trust me, this is kind of a rare event.
At least I confirmed today that I still own a GTI, and the local recycling enthusiasts haven't liberated me from the oppression of material possessions.

I have hopefully located a late Cabby nearby to poach parts from. Not sure if weather will allow me to go grab parts Sat or not. If not I have a hall pass from Mrs.84FSP to chase down my cis fueling demons.
Not sure what the rule set you are racing under but I did modify the Mk 1 knuckles to accept the VW Dasher wheel bearing and hubs. I re-enforce the knuckle to allow me to bore out the knuckle for the larger bearing. Many miles of racing with a heavy 16V Scriocco on DOT race tires without a failure.

I’ve heard of this but not seen it it personally. I may be overthinking it as my car may be Nat’s capable but it’s driver isn’t.
The only thing this mod does is give you hubs and bearings that don't turn in to metal filings and break as the worst possible time.
Doesn't make the car faster or corner better.

Understood - half the battle is keeping them alive long enough to win.
