Hi guys. I just repainted some side mirrors and for the clear coat, I used an aerosol can 2k coating. I ended up later that night reading up on how toxic and horrible the isocyanates are in the stuff and now I'm quite a bit worried.

I sprayed outside and had a respirator on, but apparently the respirators aren't enough and an air supplied mask is a better choice. I also got a little bit on a few of my fingers, and was caught in the mist a couple times as I was moving around the piece (respirator on).

This maybe just the paranoid personality I have, but how screwed am I now that its been done? I knew this stuff was nasty, but I didn't realize HOW nasty it is. Any advice for future projects on how to limit my exposure, or any safer alternatives?

You are going to be fine.

If you were doing this every day, there may be issues long-term.  Spraying outside is probably the best you can do.  I often spray outside with a charcoal mask.  I've since bought a Supplied Air System for spraying indoors and sometimes outdoors (I love it, by the way).

I do hear that eventually folks become suddenly allergic to it, and have to flat-out stop.  I know my body does not like a lot of the chemicals used in Automotive (paints, solvents, oils, grease, etc), so I try to be really careful what I come in contact with.

You're going to be fine.

Thank you! That makes me feel a bit better. Definitely I dont do this everyday and always spray outdoors. If I have to use 2k again in the future I'll invest in much better cartridge filters for my respirator and be more careful about waiting for the mist to waft away before walking around the piece.
