So I found a unicorn set of 80's three piece wheels for Rabbit after hunting for many years. They'll need to be split, have hardware cleaned up/replaced, and most importantly have the Magnesium centers blasted and powdered to prevent them reacting and turning to dust.
I'm told they are different than coating AL due to moisture uptake and need a primer sealer before the final powder.
What does the Hive know about powdering Magnesium before I drop serious coin on wheels that will need another $500 in coating and hardware before being ready for the road?
I'm guessing Chandler may have input?

Many years ago I was running a set of magnesium Marchesini wheels on a roadrace motorcycle and looked into powercoating to make them prettier and easier to keep clean. I figured that the pro racing teams would have done it and spoke to them when they came to town. Each team said the same thing: "How will you know when it cracks?" They either expected or experienced the wheels cracking beneath the powdercoat. That was enough for me and I decided to paint and inspect the wheels regularly.
The wheels eventually cracked and are now just kept as art in my shop.
YMMV

Argh - I have fears of this as these are intended to be street wheels. It's more of a dick around weekend toy but still. Maybe it's save the powder money and just blast and paint myself.
I had my BBS RS wheels powder coated by someone that does many many expensive wheels and brake calipers.
The wheels have been on my car for well over 10 years and 100k miles whit zero cracks.
I would drop him an email and see what he says.

Thanks sir! I'll drop him a line.
These are the rim type I;m shooting for. I'd probably polish lips and shoot the centers charcoal or silver.
Man , those are beautiful!
I had a set of R10s on my '87 GTi but not 3-piece.

While these aren't really high buck ~2k, they'll be the priciest rims I've ever bought. I also have love for the Ronals as I have the turbo's on there now ala a $400 craigslist find. First pic I could find with the rabbit full of CTS V wheels and tires headed to get mounted. LOL 4 18" mounted, and 4 unmounted tires fit inside...
