I've tried and given up. I can accept the stupid clippy pedals on a road bike even though I don't particularly like them. But on a mountain bike, I just can't do it. My feet need their freedom. I can't be clipped in. Is anybody with me or I am I just a relic of a bygone era?

I have a set of GT BMX platforms on my Specialized. Threw that clippy/trap trash in the garbage.

I've tried cages, platforms and clips. I ride with clips now.

Back in 1986 or so, I had the exciting experience of finding myself at speed on a mountain bike with only my hands in contact with the vehicle thanks to a sharp bump. It was a race to see if I landed on one pedal (ooo, there goes a shin), two pedals (whew) or the seat (eeeeee!). I went to cages the next day.

Cages are a bit of a pain to get in, to get out and for ground clearance when you're riding unclipped. But they're cheap!

My wife wasn't too excited about riding with clips, because she had some Shimano ones that were difficult to clip in and out of. So I set her up with some Crank Brothers Mallet pedals. Now she can ride them like a platform if she's unsure and they're super-easy to get in and out. She rides clipped now more than ever. I use the classic Eggbeater myself.

I should note that she rides a full suspension Rocky Mountain with streamers on the handlebars and little flowers that twirl around. It really pisses people off for some reason

Straight up shin scrapers here too... running fast single track sometimes you need to kick something out of the way or plant a foot keep from toppling off an embankment. I can't see how anyone can use clip-ons in the woods.

started out on flats, went to clipless for a while, went back to flats and have been riding them with 5.10 shoes, either Sam Hill 1's or Impacts and don't see much/any reason to go back any time soon, riding with 5.10s is almost as good as riding clipped in for control, but you've still got that safety net in case you need to dab out or want to back it into a turn supermoto style

I used to run clips dodging through the woods and never had a problem. Around our local singletrack - and it's some pretty good stuff - you'll want to be clipped in. If you're used to them, it doesn't take very long to get a foot out. I did fall down a small ravine last time I was out, but that had nothing to do with a delay in getting a foot free - there just wasn't anything to step on...

Around town, BMX, or downhill, I'd run platforms.

Anything else, gimme something to pull up on. Gimme clips.

Platforms on the BMX bikes--Snafu on the DK and Welgo DX copies on my SE Floval Flyer. My MCS has real Shimano DX pedals, but they're 1/2-inch spindle.

Clips for XC riding. I started off with Shimano SPD's. Good for learning since you can back the release tension right off until you're used to them. Now I use Egg Beaters, 'cos they're lighter/don't get stuck with mud/look cooler .

My shins hurt just looking at that picture.

I do XC riding almost exclusively - I leave the DH stuff to the young guys. Must be why I like to be strapped in.

Learned to ride with the Crupi pedals on my BMX bikes. Rock the toe clip circa 1992 Shimanos on my mountain bike.

I had a set of the beartraps on my old BMX... swapped em for platforms the first time I added some scars.

First time I ever saw clip ons were on my friends mountain bike. When I saw how stupid he looked tumbling 20 feet down an embankment still locked in his pedals I decided that platforms are the best for me.
