Just got back from a 16 mile evening ride. I've come to realize how much I need lighting on this bike.

Whats the latest in AFFORDABLE / DIY lighting on bicycles?

I've seen some 4Watt LED bulbs on ebay, but would need a battery pack to run it for a couple hours minimum. Also not interested in respoking a wheel for a generator hub.

So GRM, What do you suggest? I'm really trying to exercise more than the 12oz curls in the evening.

I was just at Wally World looking for bike lights, and they have LED headlight/taillight combos that are less that $20. They say on the packages that they can last anywhere between 4 and 6 hours. They look to be operated by AAA batteries.

I actually just got back from a 7 mile bike ride a couple hours ago. Kicked my ass.

The wally world stuff sucks donkey balls.

I bought a nightrider minewt from jenson usa for about $50.00 on sale.

It puts out a ton of light, weighs nothing, takes up almost no room and lasts for 4 hours.

You can charge it from your USB port as well.

Well he said cheap.

Cheap to me is taping a flashlight to the handlebars, but I didn't feel like being a smart ass.

Your LBS should have any number of commuter-quality LED head & tail light combos for around $25 or so. I wouldn't do a mtn bike trail ride with the headlight, but for lighting a road at moderate speeds it works well enough.

the road and MTB is a big difference but even on the road i'd much rather have to much light vs not enough...

I know a ton of my local night riders are using the cheapo magicshine lights... you can find knock offs for under $40 on ebay and places like dealsxtreem

I would look into something like this... you could easily build a bigger/better battery pack if you find the stock battery life isn't acceptable. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1800-Lumens-CREE-XML-XM-L-T6-LED-Bicycle-Lamp-bike-HeadLight-Headlamp-Tail-Light-/260911380170?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cbf87b6ca&vxp=mtr#ht_5675w

also make sure to have a blinky out back... the more drivers can see you the better you are.

I have two 200-lumen AA-powered flashlights, attached to my handlebars by these: http://www.amazon.com/Two-Fish-Unlimited-Flashlite-Holder/dp/B001CJXB5E

For the back, I have a Bontrager blinkie that I picked up from a local bike shop for $20. This has been my commute setup for something like two years now, and in the winter it is dark when I leave the office.
