Just wanted some input on go-karts. Resources, parts, general info, etc. Vintage karts interest me the most (or at least vintage styled). Something like this: http://norfolk.craigslist.org/for/3855207668.html.

I'm just looking for some cheap fun...something to tool around with. Any input would be great!

Google the subjects and you'll find many good parts suppliers. HF has 6.5hp engines on sale frequently. Watch CL in the motorcycle section and most days you'll find them advertised, usually quite reasonably.

Yeah, I've used the Google plenty, I just thought someone here might have some more specific insight or personal experience. I just got a coupon for the HF engine, and I check CL out frequently for them. I figured the GRM braintrust could contribute some firsthand experience, that's all.

Craigslist. Search go kart, gokart, go cart, and gocart.

I lucked out and got a kart with a live axle, (many are one wheel drive) disc brake and slicks, running, for $300. Your best bet is in the fall as no one wants that crap in the car hole come Winter.

Big community garage sales tend to bring these things out as well.

Vintage looks can be cheap, but for a true vintage race kart, you will pay out your ass. A half sphere gas tank can sell for nearly four figures on E-Bay.

I just sold this one for $70. It is not in any way a race kart, but it has the looks.

Handy with a MIG?

Nope, not at all. I'm sure I'll find something if I keep hunting Craigslist. Ideally I'd love to find one that needs an engine and then find an 8 hp or so motor on C-list too. 6.5 would be fun I'm sure, but 8-10 hp would be better, right?

I've always wanted that scenario with the 24 horse off our fairly retired riding mower.

That would be fun! The weight of it might be counter-intuitive though. I think most small 6.5 hp carts can go 35-40 mph, so I figure an 8-10 hp one would liven things up a little bit!
