CB750F opportunity or not.

A retired co-worker of mine offered me his old bike.

1979 CB750F

4,500 miles, stock and Vetter windjammer fairing, two vintage matching helmets.

Comes with the stock signals that were removed for the fairing install.

Silver color with black and redish orange stripes.

Not the actual bike.

Should I go look at it, I heard these were popular with the CAFE crowd.

Also not the actual bike.

The Cafe crowd (if you're talking cafe racers) wants the single cam 750 Four, not the later twin cam.

If you're looking for a decent UJM for yourself, go look at it. I wouldn't buy one of these to flip as they're not really a desirable bike.

What boxhead said. '79 was the first year of the DOHC which are less desirable for some reason. Fine bikes, but not worth a whole lot. 

Is the bike for you? They can still be made into very cool customs. I like it when the builders emphasize the  size of the motor rather then try to hide it. They look good as cafe racers and as 1970's -1980's superbikes.

I think the stock bodywork lends itself really well to the '70s-'80s Superbike thing...

Looks like a fun bike, but I can't help but wonder how an almost 40 year old bike only has 4,500 miles on it. Quick math puts it at around 118 miles per year.

Sat in a garage for most of it's life.  Lot's of possible reasons related to life outside riding interfering with best intentions/wishes...probably had 2 or 3 good riding seasons since new.

Not unusual. I see 1970s bikes with 4K-8k miles from new on them fairly regularly. 

I had a 1979 CB750F that I tried to do as a cafe racer and it looked and sounded amazing-but the riding was not good. The bike is too heavy (500 lbs) and too wide to do as a cafe racer.

Nothing to add except that I really like the pictures in this thread. These seem to be cheap in my area and look like a fun project.

Mileage is correct, I’ll go look at it when I get a chance.  He is asking $1600, but he is in Florida and he bike is near me in Michigan so I bet he would take an offer.

If you want it for yourself, I don't think it'd be a bad deal if it's good shape and the price comes down a bit.

That is assuming you won't end up having to rebuild the carbs and the brake system to fix the damage from having stand around for so long.
