Is the only difference between the 883 and the 1200, the pistons and cylinders?

I'm not Dr Hess but IIRC that's correct as far as the conversion kits go.

I'm not Hess, either, but that's what I've been told, too.

I'm not Hess either, but my buddy has a 1200 kit that bolts right on to his 883. Bought it 13 years ago, still looking for free time.

Not Hess.

I am Hess. FOR THE MOST PART, that is the difference. There are other subtle changes, but the two engines are MOSTLY the same. Seats, accessories, etc will be different between the 2 bikes, as the 883 is sort of a "base model" and the 1200 is "fully loaded." To convert a 883 to a 1200, yeah, you just put the new pistons and cylinders on. The bottom ends are the same (same stroke, rods, etc.) Remember that a 883 is really what was called a 900. You can also bore out your existing cylinders and just put new pistons in, but the new jugs cost a few bucks more than a proper bore job, so why bother? If I recall, you don't have to bore the cases out to go to 1200, but if you want to go bigger, you may have to. I offered to convert Dr.Linda's 883 to 1200, but she said that she had enough power as it was, especially with the Megasquirt now.

Suprised that there are not new heads or at least larger valves.

In 1987, you could get a 883 or an 1100. Later, they changed it to a 1200. The aftermarket community immediately came out with all kinds of kits to swap the pistons and jugs out with. I think you could get a 1600cc Sportster kit. You would have to bore the cases out for that.

Seems like a cheap upgrade.

I couldn't love GRM the magazine or the website more, and believe me, I don't like to be the P.C police or anything or the guy who has a problem with everything thing, but I do have a problem with this... I find it a bit offensive that you use terms like "Hess", "Dr" etc etc... for your little descriptions or whatever in the land of cyberspace. I myself do not have a medical degree, nor am I an internet stud like Dave Hardy, but I feel sensitivity for people with student loans the equivalent of three Latin American nations, and my friend in Arkansas has a degree in the field.

These terms although I'm pretty sure are not even real words, are obviously meant to resemble the words used to describe people with a Europa and awesome bread recipes, and it appears that they are used on these boards in a joking sense which, as I view it, makes light of people who do have a medical certification. It just doesn't seem right to me, that's all. I know that it's not my message board, and that no one forces me to post here, but all the same, some things are wrong when they really don't need to be.

Who's gonna tell Mental Hess is a real Doktor. As in the medical kind and not the "Doctor of Love" kind?

IIRC, I could be wrong, but I thought the 1200 did come with bigger valves and a slightly larger combustion chamber, but the difference isn't enough to matter for most folks. Regardless, the piston and cylinder swap kits are bolt on deal

I took a quick look at my parts manual and the valves are different. Different valves and seats, different head, just by part numbers. Also, interestingly enough, the flywheels are different based on part numbers. I could look at the specs, but I'm pretty sure the stroke is the same.
