I've been in the market for a little while for a nice woods/trail bike. Shouldn't be an issue, but the state of WI only allows registered and licensed street bikes to run on public trails (also goes for national forest land, too). So I am limited to running some form of a dual sport. Since I am looking at doing very minimal road riding, I am looking for something more offroad oriented, which leads me to look at KTMs, Huskys, and the WR250R. I've been looking at the KTM 350 EXC for a little while, and although it's really nice, the price tag is a killer. Same with the Husky TE 310. The Yamaha WR250R is nice, but I guess for a trail bike it's a little tamer than I would like. Great bike, yes, but I'm not planning of doing that much road riding where I think it would excel over the other options.

So in this internal debate that I have been having with myself, a 2002 KTM 200 EXC popped up on my local CL for a decent price of $2500. It's a second owner bike that really hasnt been ridden until the past 2 year. New pipe, sprockets, suspension goodies and some other accessories already come installed and with the bike. From my brief reading on ADVrider the bike seems to be pretty bulletproof, more powerful than the 4 stroke 250 EXC, and seems to be more of an enduro than a dual sport.

So with the ever insightful GRM brain trust, is this a decent bike to get? Any personal experiences?

My buddy had an early 2000's 200 better brakes/suspension then my kdx220, didn't seem to have the bottom end of my bike but made up for it on the top end. His new bike is a newer 200 with the selectable timing maps. Never had any problems with the old one, and most of my riding buddies ride orange, just out of my budget and my kdx does good enough for me. His new one is plated and he does some dirt road to trail riding.
