Nothing particularly wrong with the CB500, but I remember the magazine road tests at the time didn't think it was as good as the previous CB450 - partly from the styling, and also if I remember correctly it didn't handle as well and wasn't quite as fast as its predecessor.
They used what was called hairpin valve springs, rather than conventional coils.
I picked up one for the wife for $100 a few years ago to go with my CB750 Café bike. They really have that nice "brit" engine look, perfect for a café racer.
Don't encourage anyone to cut up any of these old bikes please. If you want a cafe bike buy one of the many unfinished projects on craigslist which all seem to start with cutting the tail off the bike then stall there.
A friend of mine at some point decided that his mission in life was to own at least one of every Japanese twin ever made (and write about it). He didn't have many nice things to say about the turd brown CB500Ts he owned, even though for some unfathomable reason he had ended up with three of the.
The 450 is a much nicer bike.
Well just my luck..I called the guy yesterday and he said come on and bring cash. 25 minuets to get there from work. As I drove up some guy was loading it up in his truck ! Curse you bike gods !
No. There were two different Ascots. The VT500 was a V-Twin and the FT500 was a single with two exhaust ports, so many people mistake it for a parallel twin.
