I know what you're thinking- why is there a E36 M3ty moped on the side of the road with a cop parked behind it, and why is Tommy posting about it?

The answer is simple: it's mine! Pictured above being ticketed for a noise violation is my new-to-me Peace Sports 50. Here is its story:

A few months ago Mitchell, one of my best friends, called me from Gainesville and said he had just bought a moped for $500. He needed my help to fix it up, so I went up there one weekend with some tools.

Long story short, we gave it what we called "The Peace 50 Treatment." This procedure involves a new exhaust and air filter, removing the governor, and camoflaging the entire vehicle. We've been talking about doing it to his Mercedes, too, but his dad has so far resisted.

By the end of the weekend, it looked awesome and went 51 miles per hour with me on it. I left Gainesville knowing that I had done a great thing for the world. Over the next few months, he regularly updated me on its status. Apparently it jumped a lot of curbs and received a lot of tickets. One such update came with the above photo.

A few weeks ago, the Peace Sports 50 finally bit the dust. Mitchell had apparently been trying to get both wheels well in the air when it suddenly wouldn't rev past idle. Mitchell, being a literal Mercedes-driving rocket scientist, called his dad and asked for a new Ruckus. His dad said yes, so he came home and bought a new Ruckus at a dealer a few miles from GRM world HQ.

However, there was a problem- Mitchell had no way of getting his new Ruckus back to Gainesville. So I made him a deal– I'd take his Ruckus to UF in exchange for his Peace Sports 50. We loaded up the van, went to UF, and I had the Peace fixed in an hour. All it needed was a new carb and a battery, which cost $70 total. We split the cost and called it a day.

So, now I own a moped. What the heck do I do with it? I've already put 60 miles on it.

Do something stupid and lose your license driving the Trooper so you have a justifiable excuse for riding a moped.

Mopeds are like fat girls. Both a lot of fun to ride until your friend's find out.

So in Florida, are sub 50cc rides all "boozer scooters"? No license/reg needed?

My first thought is to come up with a way to haul it on your trailer, get the knobbiest tires for it you can find, and use it for errand running/recon when you are camping.

Actually, you need both a license and registration. Just no motorcycle license or insurance. I have both, so I guess I'm technically over qualified.

MoPed? I see no pedals. Looks like a scooter to me.

Run the wheels off of it and try not to pee your pants. You'll love how little it costs to run!

One of my E36 M3tier part-time jobs was delivering flyers on one of those. Horrible little things .

We're almost on page 2 and no one even asked why a young man with a new scooter has 50 feet of rope coiled up on the back seat?

I can't imagine why you wouldn't always carry that much rope with you.

Got any mini-moto racing organizations around? You could race it, like I used to do:

The moto guys look at you a little funny, but you'll have fun. And it definitely improves your street-riding skills.
